Ex-Cowboys defensive coordinator to join Eagles’ staff

May 31st, 2009

Former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart will join the coaching staff of the rival Philadelphia Eagles, a source said. Stewart has been in Philadelphia the past couple of days and is expected to sign a contract this week. After having his play-calling duties stripped last season and then being fired after the 44-6, season-ending loss to the Eagles, this was the opportunity Stewart was looking for to get back into the NFL. He had a taken a job as defensive coordinator of the San Francisco team in the newly formed United Football League, which will begin play next fall. But Eagles coach Andy Reid called after the decision by Philadelphia defensive coordinator Jim Johnson to …

Jones and Demps will battle for FS spot

May 30th, 2009

Barring in juries, almost all of the battles in Eagles training camp this summer will be for back-up positions. One starting safety spot, however, is up for grabs. This is where Sean Jones enters, stage left. He was promised nothing when he signed as a free agent shortly after Brian Dawkins departed in this offseason, and he’s fine with that. He’s also fine with being asked to participate in rookie camp this week, considering how different this defense is compared to the one he grew accustomed to in Cleveland, where he accumulated 14 interceptions and 263 tackles over the past three seasons. “I’m trying to learn this defense,” Jones admitted. “That’s the main reason why I’m here with all …

Rookies feeling ready for Reid’s West Coast offense

May 30th, 2009

With rookie camp now behind him, Jeremy Maclin can say with some degree of certainty that he’s ready for the professional level. Even those concerns — from fans and media — about the receiver’s adjustments from the simpler spread offense to Andy Reid’s intricate West Coast schemes don’t seem to be an issue. “They’re coming along just great,” he said Friday after the final rookie minicamp practice. “I think that’s no longer a question anymore.” Maclin, running back LeSean McCoy and tight end Cornelius Ingram — the team’s top three draft picks from April — were central figures in the team’s rookie and selected veteran minicamp, which concluded with Friday’s practice. If they can adjust …

Parrish taking dream as far as he can

May 29th, 2009

He left behind a law enforcement job and steady paycheck for one of the least stable professions in sports. Not that Ken Parrish is second-guessing his decision one bit. To get a second chance with the team he grew up watching is worthy every sacrifice the Eagles’ newest punter has made. “Being able to call yesterday and tell my parents that I signed with the Eagles …” Parrish said Thursday after his first practice at the NovaCare Complex. “My mom was screaming at work.” Parrish nearly gave up football after the 49ers released him in 2007 despite an impressive preseason in which he averaged 43.5 yards per punt and dropped two of his four punts inside the 20. He worked out for the …

Tight end Cornelius Ingram was back at practice a day after injuring his surgically repaired left knee when he got tangled up with two defenders during Eagles minicamp. The rookie was wearing an elastic knee brace, though, and sat out noncontact drills yesterday. He did participate in individual workouts with rookie tight end Eugene Bright.Ingram tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in August and sat out his senior season at Florida after undergoing reconstructive surgery.New punter The Eagles signed free agent punter Ken Parrish and released kicker Sam Swank.Parrish, a product of East Stroudsburg University and a native of East Stroudsburg, Pa., spent training camp and preseason …

Eagles rookie Ingram suffers knee injury

May 28th, 2009

Rookie tight end Cornelius Ingram suffered a left knee bruise during the Eagles’ practice yesterday. The University of Florida product tore the anterior cruciate ligament in the same knee in August before the start of his senior year. Ingram missed the entire season. The Eagles said the injury yesterday was not considered serious and that the fifth-round pick might return for today’s minicamp. Ingram was not available for comment. During 11-on-11 drills, quarterback Adam DiMichele threw a pass to the tight end. Sandwiched between two defenders, Ingram had the football slip through his hands and into the arms of safety Rashad Baker, who made the interception. “I saw the ball in the air and …

Winston Justice, King Dunlap seeking backup roles on Philadelphia Eagles offensive line

May 28th, 2009

Considering how unstable Winston Justice’s career has been since Day 1 with the Eagles in 2006, the former second-round pick at least now can finally focus on one position with one goal while understanding perfectly what’s at stake. This can do nothing but help the player who, perhaps unfairly, continues to be publicly defined by his one and only start two seasons ago against the New York Giants. Justice has gone from left tackle of the future to right tackle to right guard and finally back to right tackle, where he’ll sink or swim this summer at training camp in a quest to become a dependable backup to projected starter Shawn Andrews. Just to get a head start, Justice volunteered to be at …

Eagles’ Justice looking for a second chance

May 28th, 2009

Winston Justice was talking about the life of an offensive lineman and how one mistake can eclipse 100 flawless blocks. “If you mess up once,” the Eagles tackle said, “everyone thinks you’re horrible.” Two seasons ago, Justice messed up horribly – several times, in fact – when in his first start at left tackle, he allowed six sacks against the New York Giants. Asked if he was referring to that game, Justice managed to make light of the one moment he will forever be judged upon – until he’s given a chance to, at least, redeem himself. “I said, ‘Mess up once,’ ” Justice said. “I didn’t say anything about ‘a game.’ You brought up ‘the game.’ ” It seems whenever the conversation shifts to …

Former slam-dunk champ Parker working to make it with Eagles

May 28th, 2009

IT’S NOT too often that winning a slam-dunk contest leads to a pro football career. But that’s Byron Parker’s story, and he’s sticking to it, just as closely as Parker plans to stick to receivers this summer, in his third attempt to make an NFL roster as a safety/cornerback. Parker, 28, came to Tulane as a basketball guard, led the team in steals his senior year. Never scoring more than 12 points in a college game, though, kind of kept him under the NBA’s radar. Even after Parker won the slam-dunk contest at the Final Four in 2003 (to watch, go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaAubBqAvVs), capping his rim-rattlers with a complicated, soaring, reverse-thingy he called “The X-Factor.” As the …

Good soldier Klecko back on defensive line

May 28th, 2009

It feels like home again Dan Klecko is back where he thinks he belongs — sandwiched between the end and tackle on the defensive line, his right hand planted on the turf and the quarterback on his radar. “I like playing tackle,” he said Tuesday, the smile widening across his face. “I love rushing the passer.” Klecko returned to defensive tackle this spring after playing good soldier for the Eagles last season, selflessly allowing the team to jerk him between offense and defense three times before finally settling on one side of scrimmage. How’d he do? “I really haven’t studied the fullback position to know if I was good at it or not,” he said, “or if I was progressing at it.” With each …

Eagles’ Hobbs a mirror image of Brown

May 27th, 2009

When Sheldon Brown told the Eagles he would like to see a trade at the cornerback position, this isn’t exactly what he had in mind.Brown wasn’t asking the Birds to get another cornerback to take his job and further marginalize the dissatisfied veteran. He was looking for his own ticket out of town. That’s not how it worked, however, and even though it’s a strange situation, the Eagles have replaced – but not removed – a player who asked to leave the team, and brought in a player who was equally unhappy with his own situation somewhere else.Sheldon Brown and Ellis Hobbs are professional mirror images, except for Brown being four years older. Each is looking for the right place to play …

Undrafted Gaines hopes to fit in with Eagles

May 26th, 2009

Josh Gaines knows the drill.Don’t stand out. It’s a difficult concept to heed, considering that the Eagles defensive end is trying to do almost anything to separate himself from the pack.At Penn State, despite the nameless uniforms, Gaines had no trouble gaining the attention of his coaches. But he was overlooked in favor of his peers by those outside the team.Gaines comes to the Eagles as just another undrafted rookie free agent facing odds that are stacked Mount Nittany high. But he doesn’t have to contend with the culture shock of playing for the no-nonsense Andy Reid. The Eagles’ coach and Penn State’s Joe Paterno have a lot in common.”He runs practice just like Joe,” Gaines said of …
