Eagles’ new-look offensive line runs into early injuries

July 31st, 2009

If you’re headed up to Lehigh for the first full-squad, contact workout of Eagles training camp this morning, we have some bad news. First, the construction along 309 is really a pain. Not entirely sure, but the town of Coopersburg seems to be installing a subway system, or perhaps an intricate series of roadside tunnels that citizens could take refuge in, should Hellertown acquire a nuclear capability and become belligerent. Maybe a little more vexing, even, is that barring a miracle of healing, the starting offensive tackles this morning are going to be Todd Herremans and Winston Justice, which is not what the Eagles had in mind when they elected not to bring back steady pillars Tra …

McCoy right in the middle of his dream

July 31st, 2009

LeSean McCoy didn’t say he pinched himself, but he left the impression that he’s wondering if this is all real: the Lehigh fields, the early practices, the jerseys and Donovan McNabb. It was just a few years ago when McCoy, then a Pennsylvania star high school running back, trekked here in search of McNabb’s autograph. Now, he’s taking handoffs from the Eagles’ franchise quarterback. “It kind of is,” the rookie running back said when asked if he’s living out his dream. “I remember when I was down here as a fan trying to get an autograph from Donovan, and now I’m actually here on the practice field going through the process of training camp. This right here is what I’ve been dreaming about …

New-look line not ready for contact

July 31st, 2009

Andy Reid won’t be showcasing his star-studded offensive line to the Lehigh masses this morning. Not only will the overhauled unit’s debut be pushed back, but some of the team’s other major superstars won’t be unleashed either when the Eagles conduct their first contact scrimmage of training camp. Joining already injured Pro Bowl running back Brian Westbrook and defensive end Victor Abiamiri on the Physically Unable to Perform List Thursday were right tackle Shawn Andrews, left tackle Jason Peters, cornerback Asante Samuel and defensive tackle Trevor Laws. Five of those six are projected starters and four have made multiple Pro Bowls. As for Andrews, Peters and Samuel, Reid couldn’t give a …

Eagles first-round pick Maclin unlikely to make up for lost time

July 31st, 2009

Andy Reid wasn’t making a threat. He wasn’t even trying to send a warning to holdout rookie wide receiver Jeremy Maclin. In the Eagles head coach’s perspective, he was just stating a fact.Maclin has missed the first 5 days of training camp and, as a result, has missed valuable learning time that has set him behind.”That’s the fact of it,” Reid said yesterday as the Eagles had their first full-squad workout with the exception of Maclin, the first-round pick who hasn’t been in camp because a contract agreement hasn’t been reached. “How ever it’s said or worked out, it comes down to playing the game. It’s that simple. Any reps you take away from yourself, I think it hurts you as a player.”Reid …

A good sign: Gap between Eagles, Maclin appears to be closing

July 31st, 2009

Well, the first-round picks are starting to sign, across the NFL.And the Eagles hold their first full-squad, contact practice this morning. So, whither Jeremy Maclin? There were indications last night that a deal might be near between the Birds and their first-round wideout, who has missed six workouts in shorts, five of them held among rookies and a handful of veterans recovering from injuries. Team sources seemed to think the gap was narrowing, and that the rising number of slots being filled in above and below Maclin should speed the process. Certainly, if the impasse drifts on through the weekend, there’s a real problem, more substantial than we’ve been led to believe up to now. That …

Peters, Andrews, Samuel among ailing Eagles

July 31st, 2009

There was a time when it seemed possible that the Eagles’ offensive tackles for 2009 would be Todd Herremans and Winston Justice. That time had long since passed.Nevertheless, there was Herremans at left tackle and Justice on the right side yesterday when the Eagles gathered for their first full-squad workout of training camp in the searing afternoon heat at Lehigh University.Things obviously didn’t go as planned.Left tackle Jason Peters, the Eagles’ prize acquisition of the off-season, spent practice working with trainer Rick Burkholder and a contingent of other injured teammates. That group included cornerback Asante Samuel, who had a hamstring spasm during yesterday morning’s …

Maclin’s absence has Reid concerned

July 31st, 2009

Andy Reid appeared more concerned yesterday afternoon about the continued absence of first-round pick Jeremy Maclin. The contract negotiations for the rookie wide receiver were not done, which wiped out the first several days of practice for Maclin.”You can’t buy back that time,” Reid said yesterday at Lehigh University after the Eagles’ first full-squad practice. “He’s going to have to be playing a catch-up game. It’s important that he’s here; that’s the bottom line.”Maclin has missed four days of practice. The team begins full-contact drills this morning at 8:15 a.m. Reid said that both sides were “not as close as we need to be.”Andrew Brandt, who is handling negotiations for the Eagles, …

Feeling Jim Johnson’s presence at Eagles training camp

July 30th, 2009

Sean McDermott doesn’t view it as a growing cloud hovering around him. The Eagles’ rookie defensive coordinator does not fear the huge shadow of legendary coordinator Jim Johnson growing into an enveloping force, after Johnson’s passing on Tuesday. In fact, it’s just the opposite. After all, Johnson looked out for McDermott virtually since the first day they met. “I had an office across the hall at Veterans Stadium from Jim and I was operating at the time as [coach Andy Reid's] assistant,” McDermott said yesterday, reminiscing about his first encounters with Johnson. “Jim would always come out and check with me on how I was doing.”I had very little influence on Jim or the defense at that …

Brown reports to Eagles camp, hopes age has privileges

July 30th, 2009

Now we know what was so funny. In his remarks opening Eagles training camp on Sunday, Andy Reid said he knew disgruntled corner Sheldon Brown planned to report on time with the bulk of the veterans last night because he had texted with Brown. Reid lauded Brown’s sense of humor, without providing details. When Brown climbed out of a dark-blue Mercedes and met with reporters yesterday evening, under an overhang in a steady drizzle, Brown explained he’d texted back that since he was reading about his age being a factor in the Eagles’ decision not to rework his contract, he wanted to know how much time off Reid planned to give him.Brown turned 30 in March, so he indeed is eligible for Reid’s …

Dawkins, Johnson made a formidable defensive team

July 30th, 2009

Even before he met him, Brian Dawkins wanted to play for Jim Johnson. All he knew about the guy 11 years ago, when Andy Reid hired Johnson as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator, was what he saw the previous season when Johnson’s aggressive Seattle Seahawks defense made mincemeat of the Eagles’ offense in a 38-0, Week 1 win at the Vet.”His defense had a couple of picks for touchdowns and everything else against us,” Dawkins said of Johnson, who lost his battle to cancer Tuesday. “I saw how aggressive that defense was. To have an opportunity to play in such a scheme was very exciting for me.”It turned out to be an incredibly successful partnership. Johnson made Dawkins a star and Dawkins …

Johnson had knack for seeing best in all his players

July 30th, 2009

Many coaches look at players and too often only see what they can’t do. Jim Johnson looked at players and saw what they can do.When everybody was ready to send defensive end Darren Howard packing last summer after his miserable, one-sack performance in ’07, Johnson insisted that Howard still could be useful to his defense as an inside rusher on passing downs. Johnson was right. Howard ended up with a team-high 10 sacks last season, with most of them coming as a nickel tackle.”Jim was great at figuring out ways to get everybody on the field, keep people fresh and get productivity out of everybody,” Howard said yesterday, as he and the rest of his teammates mourned the loss of Johnson, who …
