Eagles sign Gaither to one-year deal

March 31st, 2010

The Eagles today signed linebacker Omar Gaither to a one-year contract. Gaither, who had been a restricted free agent, signed his tender offer. Gaither, 26, has 329 career tackles, five sacks and two interceptions during his four-year career with the Eagles. In 2009, Gaither registered 38 tackles and 1.5 sacks in five games before being sidelined with a Lisfranc sprain in his foot.

Eagles guard Stacy Andrews says he will be ready

March 31st, 2010

THE EAGLES’ offensive line might be the team’s biggest question mark right now. (Wait a minute – now we’re hearing there could be a little uncertainty surrounding the quarterbacking. We’ll look into that and get right back to you.) Eagles fans might disagree over whether Donovan McNabb or Kevin Kolb is the best QB option for 2010, but there is one thing they pretty much agree on: Neither McNabb nor Kolb is winning the Super Bowl behind the offensive line that got pushed around shamefully in the regular-season finale and then in the playoff loss, both at Dallas. And by the way, an Eagles source indicated last night that no McNabb trade is imminent; it’s very possible nothing will be …

Eagles re-sign Gocong, Hobbs

March 31st, 2010

Amid rampant trade reports regarding their franchise quarterback, the Eagles took care of other in-house issues Tuesday, re-signing linebacker Chris Gocong and cornerback Ellis Hobbs to one-year deals. Both were restricted free agents, but the market for each was understandably slim. Gocong, a four-year veteran, had his streak of 39 consecutive starts snapped when he missed the Nov. 8 loss to Dallas and later surrendered his strong-side job to seventh-round pick Moise Fokou. The Eagles acquired Hobbs in a draft-day trade with New England last April to upgrade depth at cornerback and equip themselves with a potential starter in case disgruntled cornerback Sheldon Brown elected to hold out …

Edwards is confident he can win job back

March 31st, 2010

Trent Edwards says he’s confident he can re-establish himself as a starting quarterback under the Buffalo Bills’ new regime. “I’ve always been a confident player, regardless if someone doesn’t want me to play or not,” Edwards said Tuesday after his conditioning workout at the Buffalo Bills Fieldhouse. “If the media doesn’t like me, if a coach doesn’t like me, I’m still a confident player. That’s not going to change anything about me. People can criticize me. There’s obviously doubters out there. It’s my opportunity, my chance right now, to change those into believers. That’s my attitude. That’s not going to waver, regardless if I’m sitting on the sideline or whether I’m playing.” Edwards …

Source: McNabb talks may go until draft

March 31st, 2010

The Philadelphia Eagles are continuing trade discussions with a number of teams about trading quarterback Donovan McNabb and those discussions could continue until draft day, a senior team official told ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio on Tuesday. “There is no so-called front-runner,” the senior team official said. “We continue to engage in conversations with multiple teams that initially contacted us. Some of the offers involve draft picks, some involve a player, some involve many players. We are evaluating the offers. But if some team had totally blown us away, we would probably have made a deal already.” League sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Monday that the Oakland Raiders have …

Eagles re-sign Hobbs, Gocong

March 31st, 2010

Restricted free agents Ellis Hobbs and Chris Gocong signed one-year contracts with the Eagles yesterday. The Eagles tendered Hobbs at a first-round level and Gocong at his original third-round draft level earlier this month. Neither free agent, however, was expected to draw much interest, especially since other teams would have had to part with high draft picks if the Eagles weren’t going to match an offer. Hobbs will make $2.621 million in base salary, and Gocong will make $1.176 million. Hobbs, a cornerback and kick returner, had season-ending neck surgery last November, but the Eagles are expecting him to make a full return. Gocong started last season at strong-side linebacker but …

Playing safe not working for Eagles

March 30th, 2010

Back when I lived in Dallas, I met a legendary poker player named TJ Cloutier. Interesting guy. Made most of his money on cards, though there aren’t too many games he hasn’t embraced. For years, his peers have regarded him as one of the best in the world. He’s smart – knows the odds and the numbers and all that, but as the players are fond of saying, he has a lot of gamble in him. A friend of mine wrote a story about Cloutier that described how he’d often take his poker winnings to the craps table. When I met him, I asked Cloutier why he didn’t just pocket the money and play it safe – maybe deposit a fat check in the bank and save it for down the line in case things got lean. I’ll always …

Eagles sign cornerback Ellis Hobbs, linebacker Chris Gocong to one-year deals

March 30th, 2010

The Philadelphia Eagles today made sure two of their own restricted free agents won’t be changing teams, as the team announced it has signed cornerback Ellis Hobbs and linebacker Chris Gocong each to one-year contracts. A third-round draft choice of the New England Patriots in 2005, Hobbs played in eight games during his first season in Philadelphia last fall, recording 14 tackles and returning 20 kickoffs for 481 yards.

Raiders sources say team hasn’t had talks about trading for Donovan McNabb, contrary to ESPN report

March 30th, 2010

An ESPN report Monday said that the Raiders are the leading candidate to land Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb in a much-rumored trade that could be consummated soon. If so, that’s news to the Raiders. Two Raiders employees remain steadfast that the Raiders haven’t even spoken with the Eagles about McNabb, who is in the final year of his contract. Also, Eagles coach Andy Reid said last week that he isn’t seeking to trade McNabb, just listening to offers. That hasn’t prevented the McNabb-to-the-Raiders angle from being explored from coast to coast, in the papers, on the Internet and across the airwaves. Last week, Yahoo! Sports said the Raiders and Buffalo Bills were the …

Sources: McNabb may be Raider

March 30th, 2010

The Oakland Raiders have emerged as the leading candidate to land quarterback Donovan McNabb in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, league sources tell ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The sources say all the ingredients for a trade are in place. Of all the teams the Eagles have spoken with, the Raiders have been the most willing to meet the Eagles’ asking price. Last week, The Associated Press reported that the Eagles want a pick in the top 42 of the 2010 draft for McNabb. Oakland has a second-round pick that is the 39th overall selection. Also, the sources say McNabb’s contract, which has one year and $11.2 million left on it, has scared off other teams. But, the sources say, Oakland …

Who’s behaving badly? Not McNabb

March 28th, 2010

In a perfect world, there would be no tears and no news conference. Just a nice little note with a sincere “thank you” for all the wonderful years he has experienced in the National Football League. Then Brett Favre would finally mean it when he says goodbye – when he decides to disappear for good, not just the off-season. That way, he wouldn’t be seen or heard from in Minnesota or anywhere else until his Hall of Fame induction – paving the way for Donovan McNabb’s move to the Twin Cities, where he can reside in a place that will truly appreciate him. But again, that’s in a perfect world. In the real world there isn’t such a thing as perfection – because there is Favre, the man who just …

Is Kolb ready to deliver for the Eagles?

March 28th, 2010

If Donovan McNabb is traded, Kevin Kolb will go from being the most popular Eagles player in town to being the starting quarterback. It’s a tough adjustment to make but the Eagles apparently believe he can handle it. Of course, McNabb has not been traded and Kolb is technically on the market as well. But the die was cast when Andy Reid said last week that the Eagles were “entertaining offers” for their three quarterbacks (read: McNabb). Now that it’s out there, it would be remarkably hard for Reid and company to bring back the player who has been the face of their franchise for the last decade. And even if McNabb were to return, Kolb would likely get his chance in a year barring some …
