ASK RICKY SAPP how he expects to earn his keep with the Eagles and he has a ready response. “I’m a pass rusher,” said the fifth-round pick from Clemson. “That’s what I do. I think I can help them coming in, in that situation.” So do the Eagles, which is why you shouldn’t pay too much attention to the fact that Sapp will be spending the next 3 days lining up at strongside linebacker during the team’s postdraft minicamp. This isn’t Chris Gocong, The Sequel. Four years ago, the Eagles selected Gocong, a prolific pass-rushing defensive end at Division I-AA Cal Poly, in the third round of the 2006 draft and immediately moved him to the SAM position. Jim Johnson’s initial plan was to turn Gocong …

LeSean McCoy would have liked a redshirt season in the NFL. The Philadelphia Eagles’ second-year running back is just now starting to feel like he’s physically set for the demands of the long pro season. “Coming from college and (playing right away) I didn’t have a full year to bulk up,” said McCoy after the first session of the Eagles’ minicamp today at the NovaCare Center. “I did a little extra lifting this offseason. I want to lower my body fat and make my muscle more solid.” McCoy is, at 21, still one of the youngest players on the Eagles roster. The Harrisburg native and University of Pittsburgh product said the physical toll added up in 2009.

NOW ROY and Lanell Kolb don’t have to worry about whether they can afford to travel to all the games. When Kevin Kolb’s father talked to the Daily News a few weeks back, he expressed the hope that he and Kevin’s mom could make it up from Texas for every Eagles contest this season, their son’s first as the team’s designated starting quarterback. Roy said he would have to see what the budget could accommodate. Yesterday, Kevin Kolb laughed when someone reminded him of his dad’s prudence; Kevin agreed that his new, $12.26 million guarantee for a contract extension through the 2011 season will ease those concerns considerably. “It’s been a good month. Named the starting quarterback, contract …

Eagles give Kolb 1-year contract extension
It looked so good, Brandon Graham had to take a picture. Seeing his first NFL locker, with three pairs of shoes, a No. 54 jersey and his nameplate, the Eagles’ top draft pick snapped two photos with his cell phone. “That’s going to be my screen saver,” the defensive end said. He was one of more than two dozen Eagles rookies soaking in the anticipation, expectations and jitters – along with the warm reality of lifelong goals met – as they arrived at the team’s NovaCare Complex on Thursday on the eve of their first practices as professionals. The minicamp starts on Friday. Having just left college, the mix of highly touted draft picks and undrafted rookies arrived with a feel of their first …

Rookies’ first day is picture perfect
Despite the roadblocks and obstacles of contract negotiations presented by the NFL’s ongoing labor dispute, the Eagles and Kevin Kolb struck an agreement that will keep the Eagles’ starting quarterback in place for two more seasons. On the eve of the team’s first full-squad minicamp practice, the Eagles announced a one-year extension for Kolb that carries the fourth-year pro until the end of the 2011 season and pays him $12.26 million in the two-year span. “It’s been a good month,” said Kolb, who recently became a father for the second time. “Named the starting quarterback, contract extension and, of course, the baby. So, it’s been a whirlwind. “I know there’s a lot of responsibility and a …

Eagles show Kolb the money
The news keeps getting better for Kevin Kolb lately: He has a new promotion, a new daughter, and, after he signed a one-year extension with the Eagles on Thursday, a new contract. “It’s been a good month,” Kolb said at the NovaCare Complex on the eve of Eagles minicamp. “It’s been a whirlwind.” Kolb, who originally had only one year left on his rookie deal, is guaranteed to earn $12.26 million over two years, according to his agent, Jeff Nalley. A one-year extension might not seem like much of a commitment to give a starting quarterback, especially in light of the transformation the Eagles have undergone this off-season. But a new rule in the expiring collective-bargaining agreement limits …

Eagles extend new starter Kolb’s contract by a year
IF YOU WENT on a 7-day cruise and the first 6 days were a blast, but then on the seventh day the boat sank, chances are the unfortunate events of Day 7 would color your memory of the entire trip. Which brings us to the play of the Eagles’ defense last season. Because of the way Sean McDermott’s unit was abused by the Dallas Cowboys in those two ugly, season-ending losses down at Casa de Jerry Jones, there is a tendency to believe the whole season played out as miserably as those two games. In actuality, until Tony Romo and Co. exploited every one of their weaknesses for all the world to see, they hadn’t played that badly. Despite having a half-dozen starters and key role players miss a …

Reinforcements energize Eagles defensive coordinator McDermott
Kevin Kolb and the Eagles have agreed to a one-year contract extension through the 2011 season, the team announced today. The Eagles quarterback is set to earn a guaranteed $12.26 million, according to Adam Caplan of scout.com. A message left with Kolb’s agent, Jeff Nalley, was not returned immediately. “We’re happy to have Kevin under contract for the next two seasons,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said in a statement. “When given the chance, Kevin has proven to have good command of this offense and we’re looking forward to having him operate as the number one quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.” Added Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, “We’re excited about what we’ve seen from Kevin …

Kolb gets one-year deal
The Eagles yesterday announced they have agreed to terms with punter Ken Parrish on a 3-year deal. Parrish returns to the Eagles after spending training camp with the team last season. He was picked up by the New York Jets shortly after being released, but did not make the team. Originally a rookie free-agent signing by San Francisco in 2007, Parrish was a two-time first-team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selection at East Stroudsburg, where he averaged 40.7 yards per punt in his career.

Within minutes of being selected with the Eagles’ top draft pick, speed-rusher Brandon Graham told reporters he hopes to have an immediate impact this year. The team clearly hopes so. With the Eagles using three of their 13 draft choices on defensive ends, they sent an obvious message: bolstering the pass rush is key to revamping a defense that slumped through a subpar 2009. “In the National Football League, you have to be able to put pressure on the quarterback. You put pressure on the quarterback, it makes everybody better,” coach Andy Reid said after the draft. “So, we went out and brought in some guys we felt can rush the passer.” At the top of that list is Graham. Fellow ends Daniel …

Getting a fast rush from Eagles’ Graham
Just because the draft is over, that doesn’t mean that Howie Roseman can go on vacation. In the midst of one of the busiest Eagles off-seasons in recent memory – 39 new faces have been added – the general manager said Tuesday that there is always time to acquire more players, even if most of the 2010 roster is in place. “We discussed this all along,” Roseman said. “We don’t play until September. There’s opportunity at every position to keep getting better. But we do feel comfortable with what we have.” That may qualify as reassuring news for those who feel the Eagles failed to address two pressing needs through free agency or the draft – at cornerback and on the offensive line. This first …

Eagles GM Roseman still working hard
The Eagles added three more undrafted free agents yesterday, and claimed guard Shawn Murphy off waivers from Tampa Bay. Murphy, 6-4, 315, is the 27-year-old son of former Braves and Phillies outfielder Dale Murphy. He played at Utah State, then was drafted in the fourth round in 2008 by Miami. The Bucs picked him up when the Dolphins cut him last October. Also added to the roster for the minicamp that starts Friday are wide receiver Keithon Flemming, from West Texas A & M; defensive end Eric Moncur, from Miami; and corner Devin Ross, from Arizona.
