The Super Bowl is Upon Us…

February 4th, 2010

The 2010 Super Bowl is upon us and looks to be a true match-up of the best two teams in the NFL from this season. With arguably the two best quarterbacks squaring off, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, this game could go down in the record books as one of the best.

Fact: This is the second time in NFL history that the #1 and #2 overall rated quarterbacks have squared off in the super bowl. The last two to do it: Mark Rypien and Phil Simms.

I usually don’t like to bet on the Super Bowl because it’s a tough game to call, but this year I might have to get in on the action. Ya know, give me that extra incentive in pulling for someone this year. Keep me on the edge of my seat. This years Super Bowl odds currently stand with Indy being a 5 point favorite, but I’m sure that will change as we near kickoff Sunday evening. Speaking of odds, I usually do my Super Bowl betting over at BetUs.com. They had some deal a ways back where I could double my buy in amount, so I took it, considering it was free money to play with. I eventually lost it all of course because I bet with my heart. This year I’m looking to change that.

So grab yourself some ice cold beers, some delicious food, a few good friends and kick back and enjoy the show. Because this years Super Bowl will be just that, a show, and one for the ages.

Dave Spadaro Spits on Jerry’s Star, Later Apologizes

January 7th, 2010

Dave Spadaro, the main voice for Eagles management to the media, is front and center of the Philadelphia sports world today as his personal videotape of him spitting loogies onto the Dallas Cowboys star were published on the teams website earlier in the week. The video, shown below, was promptly taken down after everyone, besides Spadaro apparently, realized the indecency and unprofessionialism of the video.

While on my drive in this morning the talk on 97.5 The Fanatic was that Spadaro could potentially lose his job over this bonehead move. We all remember that Eagle brass has been known to fire people for much less when they allegedly fired a lower level employee for simply down talking the Eagles after a loss on his Myspace page.

DeSean Jackson Rips McNabb on Radio Show

October 21st, 2009

While driving across the city last night I was fortunate enough to catch the DeSean Jackson Radio show ‘LIVE from the Philadelphia airport’ for the first time ever.  Interesting intro to say the least.

desean-jackson

DeSean seemed to be in a decent mood after the Eagles sloppy and mind-boggling loss to the lowly Oakland Raiders Sunday evening.  However he did have a few comments for his fellow teammates that I’m sure he hasn’t told them in person yet.  When asked by Brian Seltzer about what happened at the end of the first half when Donovan used a timeout the Eagles didnt have, DeSean had this to say:

Donovan needs to be better aware of the clock in that situation and know where we stand as far as timeouts.

DeSean went on to explain that play call was for a wildcat formation and everyone was a little bit iffy as to who was supposed to be in and where.  Michael Vick ended up going out in motion with DeSean in the slot and before McNabb knew it, the play clock was down to :01 and he just burned a timeout real fast out of pure instinct.

After explaining this play, Brian Seltzer poked a little bit deeper asking whats the deal with the wildcat and Michael Vick. Pointing out the fact that is doesnt seem to working and the wildcat has produced very few positive yardage plays so far this season. DeSean’s response:

Michael Vick needs to become more productive when he’s out there.

Now I understand the frustration from losing to the Oakland Raiders, but how does DeSean expect Vick to become productive if he can barely get into the game, coming in every 25 plays to act as a decoy once a drive and not see the field until the next quarter.

DeSean is definitely right when it comes to your veteran leader, and Pro Bowl Quarterback Donovan McNabb knowing where you are during the course of the game and how many timeouts his team has.  However I disagree with DeSean’s points made about Michael Vick.  I think the Birds need to get back to basics and utilize all their offensive weapons.  Vick should definitely be seeing some more PT if the Eagles expect him to get acclimated back to the NFL and be a positive asset to this team moving forward.

Eagles Need to Find More Offensive Consistency

October 21st, 2009

philadelphia-eagles
Throughout the years, the Eagles have found a lot of success on offense by being able to spread the ball out get a number of different players involved.  So far this year, I feel as though the Eagles are struggling to do this.  Rather than a lot of different players getting the ball, it seems as though the offense is relying on one or two players to have big games.  Below is a breakdown of how many players had more than two receptions each week:

Week One: 2
Week Two: 6
Week Three: 3
Week Four: BYE
Week Five: 2
Week Six: 3

Week Two was the only week where the Eagles spread the ball often to a variety of different players, but it came in a losing effort as the Eagles defense had their worst outing against a talented Saints offense.  Despite the loss, the offense was able to put up over 450 yards on the day.

When the Eagles are spreading the ball around and getting everyone involved, it makes them very hard to game plan against.  This season you have seen DeSean Jackson have a huge game, then come out and get shut down the next week.  The same thing happened with Jeremy Maclin.  Both of these guys should be having multiple receptions every game.  Along with them, you have another receiver in Jason Avant who is an absolute monster on third downs, and with the way they couldn’t convert on third downs against Oakland should see more work.  Factor in an extremely talented tight end and two running backs who can wreak havoc in the screen game and the possibilities are endless.

I don’t think these troubles are stemming from Donovan McNabb either.  The game scheme and play calling has been completely too predictable.  This team definitely has the talent on offensive to be absolutely unstoppable.  They simply aren’t utilizing it all.  I can only hope that Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg can come to realize this.

Birds Fill Hole at LB and Trade for Witherspoon

October 21st, 2009

Well, the Rams love our buried on the depth chart wide receivers.  Yesterday evening, at the 11th hour the Philadelphia Eagles shipped Brandon Gibson, who from all accounts is a superstar in the making (with patience) and a 5th round pick to the St. Louis Rams for LB Will Witherspoon.

will-witherspoon.

Witherspoon who was the Ram’s team MVP in 2007, played in all 16 games and recorded 117 tackles.  Also off to another solid start in 2009, Witherspoon has tallied 33 tackles through Week 7 of the season.

The force behind this move is obvious, as the Eagles continue their search for an anchor in the middle of their Linebacking core.   With Omar Gathier, for whatever reason, appearing to have just completely lost ability to play the position combined with nagging injuries, and Jeremiah Trotter looking like a 50 year old man out there, Witherspoon appears ready to step in and claim that spot in the middle for the foreseeable future.  A quick, strong, reactionary 6-1 239 pounder with 4.6 forty speed, the Eagles appear to have their new MLB for the next couple of seasons.

McNabb Back and Looking Crisp

October 12th, 2009

Donnie F was back under center yesterday and looked pin point accurate, going 16 for 21, for 264 yards passing and 3 touchdowns, including a beautifully thrown 51 yards needle threader to rookie Jeremy Maclin in the first quarter, as the Eagles continued to dominate the league’s weak, cruising to a 33-14 victory at the Linc yesterday.

Jemery Maclin finally emerged and lived up to the first round pick, catching 6 passes for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns, Brian Westbrook got into the end zone for the first time this year, as this one was never in doubt from the onset.  This game was won more on the defense side.  Constant pressure on quarterback Josh Johnson and forced him into three INT’s, giving the Eagles solid field position all day, which they took advantage of often.

The feast against the feeble continues next week as the Birds travel to Oakland to take on the winless Raiders at 4pm next Sunday.

Philadelphia Eagles Week 5 Fantasy Forecast

October 9th, 2009

eagles-logoWith the 0-4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming to town this is a must start for all relevant Philadelphia Eagles starters in all league formats.  Donovan McNabb has had 3 weeks to rest and heal his broken ribs to come back for the perfect matchup against the 19th ranked pass defense in the NFL.

Brian Westbrook has also had time to nurse his ankle sprain which kept him sidelined in the Eagles last game against the Kansas City Chiefs.  B West is a must start as he faces a defense who surrendered 226 rushing yards to the New York ‘Football’ Giants in Week 4.  Look for him to break a few long ones.

With a healthy Donovan you know Andy Reid will be looking to air it out, a week-5-projectionsLOT.  ‘From the obvious name department’ as Matthew Berry says, DeSean Jackson is an absolute start as well as the 3rd overall tight end in Fantasy Football, Brent Celek.  Celek was the beneficiary of ‘his boy’ Kevin Kolb the past two weeks, so keep an eye on how many times Donovan looks his way.  Stud rookie phenom Jeremy Maclin looks to be in line for his second consecutive start with Kevin Curtis still having issues with his knee.  Maclin is a possible WR3/Flex play in 12 team or deeper leagues.

And the #1 overall defense in the NFL, the #2 defense against the pass in the NFL, and the #7 defense against the rush in the NFL; otherwise known as the Philadelphia Eagles D, yeah you start them too.  Oh and Jeremiah ‘The Axeman’ Trotter is back and getting the nod at the MIKE.  ‘Bout to tear the doors off the Cadillac.

Look I’m a huge Eagle fan and always support my guys, but I am also a very competitive fantasy football player, who spends way too much time following this stuff daily (when I should be working).  These guys are must starts, look for all to score at least one TD besides Maclin.

Happy Fantasy Football Friday.

Run and I Will Hit You Like Jeremiah Trotter

October 9th, 2009

Whelp, it’s come too this. With Stewart Bradley lost for the season in training camp, Omar Gaither just, I don’t know, completely losing his ability, jeremiah_trotter2the Philadelphia Eagles were start the Jeremiah Trotter at MLB on Sunday against the Buccaneers. The Eagles look to improve upon their 15th ranked rush defense and they’re turning to the Axeman.

Some might say it is impressive that Trotter has worked his way back into the starting slot after being out of action, basically, the past three years. I somehow this reflects on just how desperate the Eagles are to clog up the middle. Trotter will have to convince us all that we are in fact getting the 2006 Axeman, the 113 tackle run stopper. However, knee problems that cause his release from the Nest, for the second time, at the end of the ’06 season, and limited him to just 3 games in Tampa Bay, will be Trotters main obstacle. I’ll believe it when I see it, you can’t just go out and get a new knee and be as you were, I’m hesitant about this, real hesitant.

McNabb healed enough to play

October 8th, 2009

Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb won’t make a full recovery from his broken rib for another few weeks, but with some added protecmcnabb-and-vicktion he’ll be ready for Sunday’s start. McNabb will make his first start since the season opener against 0-4 Tampa Bay, most likely wearing a protective flak jacket around his ribcage underneath his jersey. McNabb said he occasionally feels some pain, like when he’s sleeping on his side or making sudden movements, but doesn’t expect to be hampered on the field. He can still fling it, he said, downfield or along the sideline. “It will be four weeks come Sunday and the bone is definitely healing,” he said. “You obviously have to take a lot of calcium and zinc and …
