Early skirmishes for jobs on Eagles’ defense

It is still early in training camp, but three position battles have emerged on the Eagles’ defense. In each case, the underdogs are fighting for repetitions in practice. At safety, Sean Jones has run strictly with the second team. At right cornerback, Ellis Hobbs has primarily been the backup but has seen occasional first-team action. And at middle linebacker, Omar Gaither has been inserted into the nickel defense, even though he’s also battling Akeem Jordan at weakside linebacker. Each had his moments yesterday during the morning practice, but it was Jones who made the strongest case that it’s still very early in the evaluation process.
