Harris earns starting safety role

Macho Harris, once an All American cornerback at Virginia Tech, is ready for his new job at free safety, even though he’s never played there. Harris, a fifth-round pick in April, will start Sunday against the Panthers — a surprise when it was announced, but not to Harris. “They feel like I’m prepared for this,” he said Tuesday. “That’s why they made the decision.” Harris made a name for himself by covering the elite receivers of the Atlantic Coast Conference, but his speed wasn’t as impressive at the NFL combine in Indianapolis.
