Surgery ends Gaither’s season

Eagles coach Andy Reid doesn’t expect the learning curve for middle linebacker Will Witherspoon to be a steep one — and for the sake of the Eagles defense, it better not be. Newly acquired this week in a trade with the St. Louis Rams, Witherspoon is expected to step right into the starting lineup when the Eagles visit the Washington Redskins Monday night. The quick move into a major role became necessary because Reid announced Wednesday that Omar Gaither will be out of the season after surgery for to repair a Lisfranc sprain.
