The lockout is still very much on, which means we’re still very much talking about where Kevin Kolb, the heavily-hyped Eagles backup quarterback, will end up playing in 2011. Today’s zany rumor — the Cleveland Browns! — comes to us courtesy of Mike Lombardi of the NFL Network. “I’m going to go Cleveland [if I'm the Eagles],” Lombardi said. “I’m not buying the Colt McCoy love affair going on in Cleveland. I don’t know how you can have the love affair. I think with the extra pick they got from Atlanta, that first-rounder, it’s gonna be hard to beat them in a poker game.” That’s an interesting take … if the Browns a) don’t believe in McCoy and b) DO believe in Kolb. The latter is made

Kolb to the Browns rumor doesn’t have real legs
The Cleveland Browns have received permission to talk to Eagles defensive-backs coach Dick Jauron about the Browns’ defensive coordinator position, a source close to the situation confirmed yesterday. Jauron, 60, was a head coach with the Bills and Bears. When he was hired last February, the hope was that he could bring some experience to a very young defensive staff, but it seemed from the beginning that Jauron might be marking time before getting a bigger opportunity. Rumors about Jauron going to Cleveland have circulated since shortly after the Eagles’ season ended Sunday with a wild-card-round playoff loss to the Packers. Asked about them Monday, Jauron said he hadn’t heard anything.

Browns get OK to talk to Jauron about defensive coordinator spot
The Eagles have granted the Browns permission to interview defensive backs coach Dick Jauron for Cleveland’s defensive coordinator position, according to an NFL source. The Eagles received the request Friday, the same day Browns president Mike Holmgren officially named Pat Shurmur Cleveland’s new head coach. Jauron, who was hired by the Eagles last January, worked under Holmgren in Green Bay from 1992 to 1994. Jauron joined the Eagles’ staff three months after he was fired as Buffalo’s head coach. He was with the Bills from 2006 to ’09, and was the head coach in Chicago from 1999 to 2003. Eagles coach Andy Reid brought in Jauron – who also had the title of senior assistant – last year to

Browns said to be wooing Jauron
Looks as if an Eagles coach could be going to Cleveland, but not the one initially rumored to be headed there. NFL.com reported last night that the Browns are expected to look at Dick Jauron as a candidate to be defensive coordinator under new coach Pat Shurmur, a former Eagles assistant who most recently ran the Rams’ offense. Jauron, who coached the Birds’ defensive backs this season, was on Browns president Mike Holmgren’s Green Bay staff in the 1990s before becoming a head coach in Chicago and Buffalo.

Browns reportedly eyeing Eagles’ assistant Jauron
Despite reports that he would be interviewed by the Cleveland Browns this week, Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg appears to be out of the running for their vacant coaching position. Pat Shurmur, St. Louis’ offensive coordinator and a former Eagles quarterbacks coach, has emerged as the leading candidate and could be close to a deal, according to various reports. As of Wednesday, the Eagles had yet to receive paperwork from teams seeking permission to interview their assistant coaches. Mornhinweg was considered a hot commodity this season after quarterback Michael Vick blossomed under his tutelage. Mornhinweg worked under Browns president Mike Holmgren in Green Bay.

Mornhinweg not on Browns’ radar
Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg is too busy plotting strategy for the NFC wild-card game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday to pay attention to reports putting him on the list to become the next coach of the Cleveland Browns. According to the News-Herald in Willoughby, Ohio, the Browns eventually plan to interview Mornhinweg as they search to replace Eric Mangini, who was fired Monday. Browns president Mike Holmgren knows Mornhinweg well, having coached him in high school in San Jose, Calif., in 1978. Mornhinweg was also on Holmgren’s coaching staff in Green Bay in 1995 and ’96. Mornhinweg is a former Detroit Lions head coach. Looking to replace defensive-minded Mangini,

In a case of we’ll take your underperforming running back for ours, the Eagles announced that they have traded Mike Bell to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Jerome Harrison. Harrison, 5-foot-9 and 205-pounds, had 31 carries for 91 yards (2.9 ypc) and four catches for 42 yards in four games for the Browns. The 27-year-old ran for 862 yards off 194 totes (4.4) and scored five rushing touchdowns a season ago. Most of those yards came in the final three games of the season when he rushed for 561 yards and scored all five of his TDs. He ran for 286 yards — third highest in league history — against the Kansas City Chiefs on Dec. 20. He also caught 34 passes for 220 yards in 2009. Harrison,

What’s going on in Philadelphia regarding quarterback Kevin Kolb? According to a league source, coach Andy Reid’s decision to bench Kolb in favor of Michael Vick signals the end of Kolb with the Eagles. The source said that General Manager Howie Roseman is canvassing the trade market to see what they could get. When the Browns explored Philadelphia’s price tag for Donovan McNabb or Kolb in March, the answer was a first-round pick. McNabb eventually was traded to division rival Washington for a second-rounder and conditional future, believed to be a 2011 fourth. Reid thought Kolb was ready to take the reins from McNabb in his fourth season. Two 300-yard passing games as a fill-in starter

Browns won’t be the only team pondering the Kevin Kolb question
Jake Delhomme still isn’t practicing, Seneca Wallace never has faced the Baltimore Ravens and now a report has surfaced that the Browns contacted the Philadelphia Eagles about the availability of Kevin Kolb. At 0-2 and heading to Baltimore on Sunday, the Browns’ quarterback situation remains a work in progress. Delhomme hasn’t practiced since injuring his right ankle in the season opener, but coach Eric Mangini is ”optimistic” about his availability for Sunday. ”He gets better each day, which is a good thing,” Mangini said. ”He’s doing everything he possibly can. We’re obviously farther ahead than where we were last week. We’ll have to see how it goes.” If Delhomme is healthy, he

Eric Berry, c’mon down!? A Friday trade with the Philadelphia Eagles might have brought the Browns two starters and perhaps cleared the way for them to draft Tennessee safety Berry, if he’s available when theyseventh overall in the NFL Draft. The Browns continued to rebuild their 31st-ranked defense by acquiring four-year veteran outside linebacker Chris Gocong and eight-year veteran cornerback Sheldon Brown from the Eagles. In exchange, the Eagles received linebacker Alex Hall and fourth- and fifth-round picks in this month’s draft, the 105th and 137th overall selections. A seventh-round choice in 2008 out of tiny St. Augustine’s College, Hall was mainly a special teamer last season. The …

Trade gives Browns two possible starters
The Eagles have made a trade — no, not that one. The Birds are sending cornerback Sheldon Brown and linebacker Chris Gocong to the Cleveland Browns, the team confirmed, for fourth- and fifth-round picks in the April 22-24 draft and linebacker Alex Hall. The trade was first reported when sources told Clark Judge of CBSSports.com of discussions. The picks are 105th and 137th overall in what is said to be a deep, talented draft. Hall, 6-5, 250, played in 14 games last season with no starts and had 10 tackles. He started two games as a rookie in 2008 and finished with 28 tackles. He also has three career sacks and played on special teams. Hall was a seventh-round pick by the Browns from …

Brown, Gocong Traded to Browns
The Browns have traded for Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown and linebacker Chris Gocong, the Eagles announced today. Philadelphia will receive the Browns fourth- and fifth-round picks in the upcoming draft along with linebacker Alex Hall. The picks are the 105th and 137th overall. Hall was a seventh-round pick of the Browns in 2008 out of Division II St. Augustine’s. He played in 14 games last season, mostly on special teams, and had 10 tackles. Hall never evolved into the fearsome pass-rusher that the Browns’ previous regime hoped he would become. Brown, 31, was disgruntled and wanted his contract renegotiated in 2009 despite having four years remaining. The trade was contingent upon Brown …
