Trade gives Browns two possible starters

April 3rd, 2010

Eric Berry, c’mon down!? A Friday trade with the Philadelphia Eagles might have brought the Browns two starters and perhaps cleared the way for them to draft Tennessee safety Berry, if he’s available when theyseventh overall in the NFL Draft. The Browns continued to rebuild their 31st-ranked defense by acquiring four-year veteran outside linebacker Chris Gocong and eight-year veteran cornerback Sheldon Brown from the Eagles. In exchange, the Eagles received linebacker Alex Hall and fourth- and fifth-round picks in this month’s draft, the 105th and 137th overall selections. A seventh-round choice in 2008 out of tiny St. Augustine’s College, Hall was mainly a special teamer last season. The …

Brown, Gocong Traded to Browns

April 2nd, 2010

The Eagles have made a trade — no, not that one. The Birds are sending cornerback Sheldon Brown and linebacker Chris Gocong to the Cleveland Browns, the team confirmed, for fourth- and fifth-round picks in the April 22-24 draft and linebacker Alex Hall. The trade was first reported when sources told Clark Judge of CBSSports.com of discussions. The picks are 105th and 137th overall in what is said to be a deep, talented draft. Hall, 6-5, 250, played in 14 games last season with no starts and had 10 tackles. He started two games as a rookie in 2008 and finished with 28 tackles. He also has three career sacks and played on special teams. Hall was a seventh-round pick by the Browns from …

Browns trade for Eagles CB Sheldon Brown and LB Chris Gocong

April 2nd, 2010

The Browns have traded for Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown and linebacker Chris Gocong, the Eagles announced today. Philadelphia will receive the Browns fourth- and fifth-round picks in the upcoming draft along with linebacker Alex Hall. The picks are the 105th and 137th overall. Hall was a seventh-round pick of the Browns in 2008 out of Division II St. Augustine’s. He played in 14 games last season, mostly on special teams, and had 10 tackles. Hall never evolved into the fearsome pass-rusher that the Browns’ previous regime hoped he would become. Brown, 31, was disgruntled and wanted his contract renegotiated in 2009 despite having four years remaining. The trade was contingent upon Brown …

Browns would need to give Eagles a first-round pick to get Donovan McNabb or Kevin Kolb

March 11th, 2010

The Browns - or any team - would need to give up at least a first-round pick for either Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb or Kevin Kolb, ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio reported this morning. The Browns, who have the No. 7 pick in the draft, have inquired about both quarterbacks, according to numerous reports. The Seahawks, who have the No. 6 overall pick, are also interested in McNabb and Kolb, Paolantonio reported. The Seahawks have reportedly been on the phone with the Eagles every day about their quarterbacks. Browns general manager Tom Heckert, who spent nine years with McNabb in Philadelphia and drafted Kolb, has been touting both to the Browns, a league source said.

Could Browns have interest in Eagles’ quarterbacks?

February 27th, 2010

New Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren said yesterday he couldn’t talk about any possible interest in the Eagles’ quarterbacks, for obvious reasons. But Holmgren talked a lot about the Browns’ quarterbacking situation, and about his philosophies. The overall sense was that Holmgren is looking to develop a long-term starter, and is not inclined to bring in a stopgap veteran. Obvious conclusion: That would make adding either Donovan McNabb or Michael Vick unlikely. Kevin Kolb? Probably something the Browns would have to think about. But ask yourself: Why would the Eagles trade Kolb? They haven’t seen fit to extend McNabb past 2010; to trade his designated successor, surely they’d have …

Former Cleveland Browns GM Phil Savage named consultant by Philadelphia Eagles

February 4th, 2010

Former Browns General Manager Phil Savage is back in the NFL in a part-time role. Savage was named by the Philadelphia Eagles today as a player personnel consultant for the 2010 draft. The Eagles have undergone some front office changes since Tom Heckert left to become Browns GM, and Savage could fill a huge void for them. New Eagles GM Howie Roseman is not a draft guru, and Ryan Grigson, promoted to player personnel director, is more familiar with the pro personnel side of things. In a statement released by the Eagles, Roseman said, “I’ve always admired the work Phil Savage has done. And after spending time with him this past year, I realized how well we could work together.” Savage has …

Roseman expected to fill Heckert’s role with Eagles

January 12th, 2010

It’s hard to assess how the Eagles’ decision-making will be different with general manager Tom Heckert’s departure to Cleveland, presumably to be replaced by Howie Roseman, because we never have had a clear picture of exactly how it worked with Heckert here. But Andy Reid is losing what he called his “righthand man,” whom he hired in 2001, when Reid got power over personnel and Tom Modrak was forced out. Roseman, currently serving in the player personnel vice president role, began his Eagles career in 2000 as an assistant to team president Joe Banner. Cleveland announced the hiring of Heckert as its new GM in a conference call yesterday evening held by Mike Holmgren, who now runs the …

Eagles’ Heckert apparently headed to Cleveland

January 10th, 2010

The Eagles returned to Cowboys Stadium last night for their first-round playoff game against Dallas, but general manager Tom Heckert did not accompany them. That’s because Heckert is about to become general manager of the Cleveland Browns, opening the door for Howie Roseman to replace him. Attempts to reach Heckert yesterday were unsuccessful, but a team source indicated that multiple reports about the general manager’s decision to take the job in Cleveland were correct. The source said as of yesterday afternoon that Heckert had not officially notified the Eagles of his departure. Heckert, 42, will likely have a role in Cleveland similar to the one he has had with the Eagles. Since joining …

Eagles GM Tom Heckert is high on list for Seahawks, Browns

January 6th, 2010

Last month, the Seahawks tried to make coach Mike Holmgren their president. This month, the Seahawks might wind up competing with their former coach for their chief of football operations. Holmgren plans to speak with Tom Heckert, the general manager of the Philadelphia Eagles, according to The Associated Press. Holmgren was introduced as Cleveland’s president Tuesday. Heckert is also identified as one of four finalists for the Seahawks’ top football post in a report on NFL.com, the league’s Web site. The report was posted Tuesday. Messages left by The Times for Heckert’s agent have not been returned going back to last week. That’s not the only candidate the Seahawks and Holmgren might …
