NFL owners push rookie wage scale in agreement

June 20th, 2011

Under the old rules, Cam Newton might’ve commanded a rookie contract including up to $60 million in guaranteed money before taking an NFL snap. And now? With the NFL pushing for a rookie wage scale as part of a new labor deal, the quarterback chosen No. 1 overall by the Carolina Panthers and other high draft picks are undoubtedly braced to feel the effects of a major landscape change. Last year’s top pick, Sam Bradford, signed a six-year deal with the St. Louis Rams that guaranteed a record $50 million. In 2009, Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford got $41 million guaranteed as the No. 1 pick. Any chance that Newton sees those type of numbers? “I don’t know about that,” Panthers

Kolb remains with Eagles, for now

April 29th, 2011

FOUR QUARTERBACKS were taken in the first round of the draft last night, which means there probably will be four fewer teams calling the Eagles about Kevin Kolb when the NFL gives the green light to player movement again. Cross off the Carolina Panthers, who took Cam Newton with the first pick, and the Tennessee Titans, who took Jake Locker at No. 8. Scratch the Jacksonville Jaguars, who traded up and grabbed Blaine Gabbert at 10, and the Minnesota Vikings, who reached big-time and took projected second-rounder Christian Ponder at 12. “It really doesn’t bother me,” said Eagles coach Andy Reid, who probably could have gotten a top-10 pick for Kolb last night if he had been allowed to trade

McDermott endorses Castillo as Eagles’ new defensive coordinator

February 5th, 2011

One guy you might expect to be critical of the Eagles’ decision to make Juan Castillo their defensive coordinator would be the man Castillo replaced. But Sean McDermott had nothing but good things to say yesterday about the offensive line coach he worked with for 12 Eagles seasons. “Juan has worked extremely hard for an opportunity like this,” McDermott said during a weekend break in Philadelphia from his job as the Carolina Panthers’ new defensive coordinator. But isn’t McDermott, dismissed last month after two seasons as Jim Johnson’s successor, a little surprised to be replaced by somebody who hasn’t coached defense since 1989 in a Texas high school? “A good coach is a good coach,”

Eagles’ search for defensive coordinator continues

January 19th, 2011

With Jim Mora visiting Denver, Dick Jauron meeting with Cleveland’s brass, and Andy Reid who knows where, the candidates for the Eagles’ vacancy at defensive coordinator appear to be dwindling. It’s too early to panic, however. Despite reports on Monday night that he was close to joining the Broncos as their defensive coordinator, Mora had not signed on the dotted line as of Tuesday night. The former Falcons and Seahawks head coach was considered the front-runner for the Eagles’ job. Jauron, meanwhile, was expected to meet with the Browns through Wednesday. If he leaves without a job offer and if Mora stays in Denver, there’s a good chance the Eagles could promote Jauron, their defensive

Carolina Panthers hire Sean McDermott to coordinate defense

January 18th, 2011

It didn’t take long for Sean McDermott to find a new home. McDermott will be the Carolina Panthers’ new defensive coordinator, a league source said Monday afternoon. He was fired from the same position with the Eagles last week. In Carolina, the 36-year-old McDermott will be reunited with new Panthers head coach Ron Rivera. The two worked together in Philadelphia from 1999 to 2003 when Rivera was the Eagles’ linebackers coach and McDermott held various positions as he began his coaching career. McDermott’s new job comes with a team short on topflight talent but also in a situation with far less pressure than he faced in Philadelphia after replacing revered defensive coordinator Jim

Mora tops list of candidates for Eagles defensive coordinator

January 17th, 2011

The Eagles aren’t going for anybody’s understudy, this time around. The three publicly identified candidates to succeed Sean McDermott as the Birds’ defensive coordinator are veteran coaches with extensive resumes. The front-runner would seem to be Jim Mora, the former Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks head coach who was Steve Mariucci’s defensive coordinator in San Francisco in the late 1990s, when Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg ran the other side. The Eagles also seem to be considering just-fired Arizona defensive coordinator Bill Davis, whose father once was an Eagles linebackers coach under Dick Vermeil, and Dick Jauron, a member of McDermott’s staff last season who

More Vick punishment

December 13th, 2010

The Chicago Bears wrote the script. All the Dallas Cowboys had to do was follow it. The best way to beat the Eagles has become fairly simple. Punish Michael Vick. Knock him down by any means necessary, either before the whistle or after. Blitz him repeatedly, especially from his blind side. Make him throw off his back foot. And if nothing else, keep him from running to his left, where he is at his best. Do all that, and you still might not beat this Eagles team, because it has so many playmakers on offense who can change the game in an instant. LeSean McCoy sprinted through a hole the size of Texas for a 56-yard run, and DeSean Jackson’s 91-yard catch and run ultimately led to the Eagles’

Who was right about McNabb? We won’t find out on Sunday

September 28th, 2010

The day of reckoning is nearly upon us, with one small hitch. We’re really not going to learn much about who was wrong and who was right, who deserved credit for the wins and blame for the disappointments, during Donovan McNabb’s years as quarterback of the Eagles. That was supposed to be the big subplot here, wasn’t it? When Andy Reid finally pulled the rip cord on the McNabb era, we were going to see whether the coach thrived without the quarterback or vice versa. But there are just too many variables for this little experiment to deliver a satisfying conclusion. When McNabb takes the field Sunday in a Washington uniform, he should be cheered for the 11 seasons he served as franchise QB,

Arrington passes physical, set to practice

August 1st, 2010

J.J. Arrington cleared the first hurdle toward making the Eagles’ 53-man roster when he passed a physical Saturday evening. The veteran running back is expected to be at practice Sunday morning. The 27-year-old Arrington was acquired Friday night when the Eagles dealt three-year linebacker Joe Mays to Denver. If he doesn’t make the roster, the Eagles will receive a 2012 sixth-round draft pick instead. There’s ample reason to believe Arrington won’t. He’s a little more than a year removed from microfracture knee surgery, a procedure that has been known to end careers. Some running backs, however, have returned from the operation – namely, the Saints’ Reggie Bush and Stephen Davis, formerly

Not everyone is ready to forgive Eagles’ Vick

March 10th, 2010

Nearly 100 of them were out there, yelling, carrying signs. More people protested against Michael Vick on the night when he was one of 32 NFL players receiving an Ed Block Courage Award than at any single event during his season with the Eagles. Almost all of the signs were printable. Vick’s Sick Not Courageous Shame on the Eagles! Michael Vick has no courage! Electrifying Dogs Drowning Dogs Dog Fighting Since when is this courage? You get the idea. The lesson is that this is not over. Even after a season with the Eagles, after all the emotions the town experienced at the time of his signing, after everybody got used to seeing him play, after the season wore on and he ended up doing a …

Michael Vick clueless again

March 4th, 2010

He has lost millions. He has been out of federal custody only since July and is still seeking some semblance of redemption. One would think the last thing Michael Vick would do is tarnish his image any more than he already has. But then that would be assuming that the Eagles’ reserve quarterback gave a shred of thought to what he was doing during a trip to Atlanta over the weekend. How Vick is clueless to this reality after all he has been through is beyond comprehension. The same guy who begged for a second chance from everyone from the National Football League to any dog-loving American decided to revert to his clueless ways in a different variety this time around. The “Gangsta Grillz” …

Peppers, Sproles among free agents who could help Eagles

March 4th, 2010

BY EARLY YESTERDAY evening, the cell phone voice mailbox for Carl Carey was full. This detail undoubtedly was the only thing that kept Carey from returning a message from the Daily News, and telling Eagles Nation what’s up between the Birds and the agent’s only client, Julius Peppers. NFL free agency begins at midnight tonight. Peppers, the Carolina defensive end with 81 sacks in eight seasons, is the biggest name available, and he plays a position the Eagles surely are looking to upgrade, the spot opposite Trent Cole. The Birds have shown in the past – Asante Samuel, Jevon Kearse – that they are willing to match the demands of the top player on the market, if they think that player offers …
