Eagles quarterback Mike Kafka adjusts to the West Coast offense

May 27th, 2010

Mike Kafka has undergone more transformations than some of the characters in his namesake Franz’s novels. Two years ago as a junior at Northwestern, the Chicago native was hailed as one of the nation’s best running quarterbacks after he set the Big Ten single-game rushing record for a QB with 217 yards against Minnesota. Last season, Kafka became one of the most prolific shotgun-style spread-offense passers in the nation. He threw for 3,430 yards and set all-time bowl records with 47 completions and 78 pass attempts in the Outback Bowl. Now Kafka, the Philadelphia Eagles’ fourth-round draft pick, needs to shift again to become an under-center West Coast offense field general. “The drops …

Eagles sign Weaver for 3 years

March 6th, 2010

The Eagles made a splash in free agency Friday, lavishing Leonard Weaver with the most lucrative contract in NFL history for a fullback, but the news caused a ripple compared to the tsunamis created by their deep-pocketed counterparts. The three-year, $11-million contract, which guarantees Weaver at least $6 million and has the potential to earn him $12 million, allowed the Eagles to secure a significant piece an offense that set a franchise record in 2009 for points. However, fans had hoped the Eagles would address defense on the day when most impact free agents are signed. But the prospect of landing a fierce pass rusher faded quickly Friday with the announcement …

Eagles re-sign fullback Weaver

March 6th, 2010

Julius Peppers got away, but the Eagles were able to sign another free agent yesterday. They just happened to sign one of their own restricted free agents. The Eagles inked Leonard Weaver to a three-year contract, making him the highest-paid fullback in league history. The deal is worth $11 million with $6.5 million guaranteed, according to Weaver’s agent, Harold Lewis. “That speaks volumes,” said Weaver, a Pro Bowl starter last season. “To have the title of being ‘the highest-paid fullback in the NFL history’ says a lot. It says a lot, not only about your peers and the organization who allowed this contract to come to [fruition], but it speaks of all the years and all the people who have …

Please don’t use this criteria in trade McNabb campaign

February 5th, 2010

HAVE SOME fun. That’s all John Brenkus wants you to do with the quarterback analysis he presents as part of his latest “Sport Science” segment on ESPN tonight. Have some fun with it, use it as pregame trivia and in-game filler. Test your friends. Test your memory with it. But please . . . don’t use it as further evidence that Donovan McNabb could never win a Super Bowl. Even if that’s what his offbeat science suggests. “I’m not saying trade McNabb,” said the host of the three-time Emmy-award-winning show. “Look, John Elway won the Super Bowl and he was 38. He was the oldest ever. “But he was the exception to the rule.” Well, one of the rules anyway. Elway’s jaw, height, weight and home …

Nicer shade of red zone for Eagles

November 23rd, 2009

The Eagles entered last night’s sort-of-a-must-win game against the Bears with well-documented red-zone problems. They were a respectable 12th in the league in total offense, but a grim 22nd when it came to converting trips inside the opponents’ 20-yard line into touchdowns (11-for-23). They were 7-for-10 in the red zone in their five wins this season, but a wretched 4-for-13 in their four losses, including 2-for-5 in last week’s eight-point loss to the Chargers. So, when an impressive first-possession drive stalled at the Chicago 7-yard line and the Eagles had to settle for David Akers’ 20th field goal of the season, you wondered whether loss No. 5 was in its embryonic stage. But on a …

Eagles’ Brown plays through injury

November 23rd, 2009

It was like most nine-car pileups when viewed in slow motion. A dozen things had to happen along the way for the result to end up being what it was, in this case a 24-20 Eagles victory over the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. This was just one of the things: Sheldon Brown. He has a slightly torn hamstring, but he played. He had to convince team trainer Rick Burkholder and general manager Tom Heckert that he was ready with a pretty strenuous pregame workout on the field, but he played. It was supposed to be part-time, helping where he could - and then he made the injury worse chasing down the Bears’ Khalil Bell on a 72-yard run in the second quarter. Suddenly, part-time was going to become …

Eagles avoid losing to themselves

November 23rd, 2009

The Eagles faced a difficult opponent last night, and it certainly wasn’t Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears. They turned the ball over. They committed drive-destroying penalties. They couldn’t, or wouldn’t, tackle anybody. The Eagles were bad. They are 6-4, with their “must-win” game in the win column, because Cutler and the Bears were so much worse. And yet . . . There were more glimmers of what the Eagles offense can be if the young skill players are able to mature quickly enough. Those glimpses were embedded among enough errors and blunders to make you tear your hair out. Turning a game full of miscues into a come-from-behind win can only help players like LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson …

In night air, whiff of desperation

November 23rd, 2009

When Donovan McNabb said last night’s game against the Bears was a “must-win” situation, and Quintin Mikell called it “our Super Bowl,” it was no surprise that Andy Reid didn’t join in the chorus. He said, as expected, that every game in the National Football League is important, and when you start worrying about the standings instead of preparing as hard as possible for the next opponent, that’s when you get into trouble. And then he directed his staff to prepare for the Bears as if the field were on fire. No-huddle offense, crazy linebacker combinations on defense, a Michael Vick play that actually worked, McNabb freely calling audibles at the line. The game plan was not for just another …

Philadelphia Eagles beat Chicago Bears 24-20

November 23rd, 2009

The latest Bears’ loss — by a 24-20 score — was defined not by interceptions but by incompletions. And with the way the Bears’ season has gone, this is progress. There were 19 incompletions against the Eagles by Jay Cutler. Some sailed high. Some nose-dived low. Others were too far left or right. In a tight game, the lost opportunities were the difference. Cutler completed 56 percent of his passes for an average per attempt of 4 yards in front of a testy crowd at Soldier Field. Three of his misses could have been touchdowns — back-to-back throws from the Eagles’ 27 to Greg Olsen and Devin Hester at the start of the second quarter — and a third-and-5 throw to Johnny Knox on the Bears’ …

Eagles teammates prepared to accept McNabb’s challenge vs. Bears

November 19th, 2009

DONOVAN McNabb doesn’t make guarantees. Those often tiresome proclamations of certain victory in a crucial upcoming game just aren’t his style. But now, with the sunset of his career being much closer than the sunrise, he does view this week’s visit to Soldier Field with great import. Not because it’s a homecoming for the Chicago native, but because the Eagles are dripping oil and in desperate need of a win. Oh, and in case you hadn’t heard, star running back Brian Westbrook will not play. “I’ve been in the league for a while now, 11 years, and at this particular point in my career, as well as this point in the season, this is a must win for us and that’s the way that we have to approach …
