Is Plaxico practical for Eagles?

June 8th, 2011

Plaxico Burress landing with the Eagles is not a particularly new or surprising theory. It just picked up a whole lot more steam with Burress’ subtle fashion statement upon his release from prison on Monday following a total miscarriage of justice that took two years off his career at considerable expense to taxpayers. But enough of that email-generating thought for now. The technology to change the past is not thought to have been discovered yet. The real focus here is on Plax’s future, particularly the potential of the Phillies cap-wearing wide receiver next playing for the Eagles. Can it happen? Absolutely. The Eagles will be among many teams with the means and the interest to add the

Asomugha not high on Eagles’ wish list

June 7th, 2011

When the NFL lifts its lockout, one of the first free agents off the shelf will be Oakland cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha — with the expectation that the Philadelphia Eagles are first in line. Or maybe not. There’s no question that Asomugha will be a hot property. He’s one of the game’s elite defenders, so proficient that once he hits the free-agent market a bidding frenzy should erupt. But don’t expect the Eagles to join the charge. I don’t. And neither do others who are close to the organization. They tell me there is an indifference toward Asomughha, mostly because he will cost a fortune but partly because he’s a press cornerback who plays only the right-cornerback position. I know, I

Do Eagles have shot at signing Burress?

June 7th, 2011

Plaxico Burress will walk out of jail Monday, and his best friend on his old team, Brandon Jacobs, thinks the former New York Giants star soon will run pass patterns for the Eagles. The 6-foot-4 receiver, who has missed the last two seasons, will be a free agent when the NFL labor dispute is resolved. “The guy is a great player,” Eagles tight end Brent Celek said Friday after an informal workout with a few of his teammates in Marlton. “We have a good coordinator (Marty Mornhinweg) and a good head coach (Andy Reid) where they would put in plays for him and get the most out of him. “If he were here, he would be a good player, a good asset.” Two weeks ago, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick

Most overrated and underrated OL Eagles

May 30th, 2011

In the third installment of this summer’s Most Overrated and Underrated Eagles of all Time, we take a look at offensive linemen. The Eagles have had plenty of terrible offensive linemen over the years. Anybody heard from David Diaz-Infante, Dennis McKnight or Lonnie Palelei lately? But who are the most overrated and underrated? Next Monday: Defensive backs. Overrated Steve Everitt He talked tough, he looked tough, he acted tough. He just didn’t play tough. The Eagles signed Steve Everitt to a much-ballyhooed five-year, $11.5 million contract before the 1996 season, making him the highest-paid center in NFL history at the time. Everitt looked the part and quickly became a fan favorite

Kevin Kolb won’t be a ‘turd’ if Eagles don’t deal him

May 28th, 2011

Kevin Kolb wants the Philadelphia Eagles to trade him and allow him to become a starting QB when the lockout ends. But he understands there’s no guarantee that will happen. And, after showing up to work out with Eagles teammates on Thursday, Kolb vowed he would be content if he returns as a backup to Michael Vick again next season. “If the situation (being the Eagles’ backup) can’t be avoided, I’m not going to sit there and be a turd,” Kolb told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “That’s not my style. I think that I’ve voiced my opinion, and there’s nothing more I can do. Just like always, whatever situation arises, I’ll just have to roll with the punches.”

Kolb joins Eagles teammates at informal workouts

May 27th, 2011

Kevin Kolb had been training about a week and a half ago near his Granbury, Tex. home when he realized that he had been away long enough. It was time. After training at a high school down south, throwing to only a few receivers, the quarterback decided to come to the Philadelphia area Wednesday and join Eagles skill position players, who were already holding informal team workouts. “I just booked a flight and came on up,” Kolb said. “I think I called Brent [Celek] like 18 hours in advance and was like, ‘Hey, come pick me up from the airport. I’m gonna stay with you for a week.’” But how long Kolb is able to room with Celek while they’re still teammates, though, remains to be seen. The

Time running out for Philadelphia Eagles to commit to training camp at Lehigh University

May 26th, 2011

Advice for those Philadelphia Eagles fans planning their vacations around the Birds’ annual flight to Lehigh University for training camp: Might want to keep an eye on that Shore rental, just in case. Lehigh Dean of Athletics Joe Sterrett said today that a philly.com report that indicated a mid-June “drop-dead” deadline for the Eagles to notify Lehigh if camp would go on at the campus as scheduled wasn’t entirely accurate. Still, he said that some lead time would be necessary once the NFL lockout is lifted or a settlement is reached between owners and players. “Normally it would take three to four weeks to put up the stands and tents that we do for camp, and the Eagles usually start

Vick says Eagles good fit for Plax

May 25th, 2011

It is not true that the Eagles are thinking of changing their traditional green uniforms to an orange version resembling prison jumpsuits. But if Michael Vick gets his wish and Plaxico Burress becomes his Eagles teammate, you never know. Burress, the former Giants receiver, is scheduled to be released from Oneida Correctional Facility on June 6, and Vick — whose NFL career also was interrupted by a stint in prison — would like to be the quarterback who gets to throw him the ball. “Absolutely it would be a great addition for our team,” Vick said earlier this week on WIP Radio in Philadelphia. “I think with the guys we have now, I think we can fit him in and make it work. Obviously the

Vick to Burress? Don’t rule it out

May 23rd, 2011

The latest Eagles buzz naturally involves another player who spent two years out of the NFL after running afoul of the law. Plaxico Burress, the New York Giants wide receiver who accidently shot himself in the thigh while attempting to hand over his pistol to a New York City nightclub bouncer in 2008, hasn’t played a down since, thanks to the absurd prison term he received for packing heat illegally in the City. Now he’s being linked by the New York Times’ Gary Myers in this column to the Eagles as his release is coming up on June 6. Myers wrote that he’s heard the Eagles will be the first in line to bid for his services. After all, he wrote, “Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and coach Andy

Eagles coaches work on plans for when lockout ends

May 18th, 2011

MORE AND MORE, it looks as if spring and much of summer, at least, will be sacrificed to the NFL lockout. The planning-for-business-as-usual stance the Eagles were taking a few months ago is giving way to a realization that this season will be very different, as work is missed that will never be made up. “The further it goes in [to preparation], the worse the product,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said last night on Comcast SportsNet’s “Daily News Live.” Reid was appearing during a NovaCare practice for the 37th annual Philadelphia Eagles City All-Star Football Classic, scheduled for Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field, with Birds defensive coordinator Juan Castillo and special-teams coordinator

Eagles draft pick Casey Matthews inherited his family’s linebacking genes

May 17th, 2011

Oregon needed a play. Casey Matthews set about making one. Down by eight, with less than five minutes to go in college’s national championship game, desperately needing the ball back, Matthews came flying at Auburn quarterback Cam Newton. With his long hair falling across his shoulder pads, who could watch and not think of his older brother, Clay Matthews III, a quarterback-hunting linebacker with similar locks? Those with longer memories might recall their father, Clay Matthews Jr., a four time Pro Bowler. Of course Casey Matthews would be here chasing the Heisman Trophy winner, the latest member of a football family tree that keeps sprouting branches. But Matthews, his family and coaches

Eagles’ McCoy eager for workouts with teammates

May 15th, 2011

For more than six hours, LeSean McCoy worked the clock from the sidelines. The Eagles running back, back in his hometown to host his second annual community day, kept time for many of the basketball games during the “Shady’s Shootout” portion of events on Saturday. McCoy, like some of his teammates, has passed the time during the NFL lockout by training in other locales. He has spent much of the offseason in Miami, but said he would join quarterback Michael Vick and other Eagles if informal workouts get off the ground next week. “I plan on it,” McCoy said. “If we have it I’ll be there. We really miss that stuff, man.” Vick said Friday that he was organizing practices to be held in the
