DeSean won’t workout with Eagles

May 14th, 2011

Brent Celek was working his phone last night as he prepared to enter DeSean Jackson’s charity gala, to benefit pancreatic cancer research. Tight end Celek was trying to secure a field for this coming week, where Eagles quarterback Michael Vick could throw to his receivers, as the Birds remain idled by the NFL lockout. Vick, who said he got some throws in recently with wideouts Jeremy Maclin and Jason Avant, eventually joined Celek and several other teammates at the Jackson event, held at the Fairmount Park Water Works. Vick said he hopes for “15 or 16″ participants, mostly Eagles but maybe a few guys from other teams. “We’ll have receivers, we’ll have DBs out there, we already have some

In Hawaii, Eagles’ DeSean Jackson talks Eagles future

January 28th, 2011

DeSean Jackson is in Hawaii this week, “chillin’ ” as he put it, with his mother, brother, cousin, and the NFL’s Pro Bowl players. But as of Thursday, he was not going to play in the game. The NFL announced that Dallas Cowboys receiver Miles Austin will replace Jackson. The Super Bowl? Jackson would play in that. But the Pro Bowl? Because, he said, an MRI exam revealed he suffered a bone bruise and a grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee in the Eagles’ playoff loss to Green Bay, Jackson is not going to risk it. The knee, he said, has not completely healed. Pencil that in as one more issue facing Jackson heading into this off-season. The knee, the contract, the potential work stoppage, the

Vick, DeSean: Two stars who need to align for Eagles

January 6th, 2011

THERE WERE a dozen disconnects in that Tuesday night game between the Eagles and the Minnesota Vikings, and the 7-10 split stood out in many ways. The inability of Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson to read each other’s mind, the essence of success between a quarterback and a wide receiver in the modern NFL, was as bad as it had been all season. The wideout needs to see the blitz pressure coming at his quarterback and adjust his route accordingly. The quarterback needs to read the nature and the positioning of the pass coverage and vary his throws as a result. The calculations each of them makes need to be precise and nearly instantaneous. The problems in that Minnesota game were not only

Jackson not concerned about records

December 23rd, 2010

DeSean Jackson’s game-winning punt return against the Giants on Sunday was the fourth touchdown return of his three-year career. But the Pro Bowl wideout and return specialist isn’t chasing the mountaintop. “Nah, man, I don’t play the game to go out and break people’s records,” Jackson said Wednesday when asked about the NFL record for touchdown returns, held by Chicago Bears receiver and returner Devin Hester. Hester took a punt back 64 yards against the Vikings on Monday night for his 14th touchdown return, breaking the record formerly held by Brian Mitchell. Mitchell, who played for the Redskins, Eagles and Giants in a 14-year career, had 13 returns for touchdowns, four of them while

Vick-Jackson vs. McNabb-Owens

December 21st, 2010

There is a feeling that Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson evoke every time they create a big play out of thin air. Fans simply shake their heads in wonder. The last time that feeling permeated these parts, another Eagles quarterback-receiver duo was wowing Philadelphia on their way to the Super Bowl. Six years ago, Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens were arguably the greatest offensive twosome in franchise history. But Vick and Jackson have raised that bar, at least in terms of excitement. And while a Super Bowl appearance like the one McNabb and Owens earned is still a long way off, Vick and Jackson, after their performances in Sunday’s immortal 38-31 win over the New York Giants, have Eagles

Jackson won’t change style

December 17th, 2010

DeSean Jackson only does flips on the field. Jackson, who said Thursday he would play against the Giants Sunday despite a limited practice due to an injured foot, doesn’t flop off the field. The flamboyant Eagles wide receiver didn’t flip from his belief since he came into the league three years ago that he should entertain on the field as well as produce despite the recent criticism from quarterback Michael Vick. Jackson drew a 15-yard celebration penalty against Dallas last week when he finished a spectacular 91-yard catch and run for a touchdown against Dallas with a fabulous flop onto his back into the end zone. Vick said he didn’t like Jackson’s flop, but did said he understood why he

DeSean Jackson scoffs at critics, says he’s an entertainer

December 17th, 2010

WHETHER DeSean Jackson practiced yesterday depends on how you define “practice.” Officially, Jackson didn’t work 11-on-11, so he went down on the Eagles’ report to the NFL as not having practiced, even though reporters saw him run patterns (seven-on-seven) and catch Michael Vick passes from formations for more than half an hour. Before practice, Jackson said he will play Sunday against the Giants despite the foot injury he suffered in Dallas. “I’ll be ready for Sunday,” Jackson said. “Can’t let my team go out there without me.” The practice situation was much harder to decipher than Jackson’s message to people who have criticized his backward plunge into the Dallas end zone, which drew a

DeSean Jackson: I’m playing Sunday

December 17th, 2010

A defiant DeSean Jackson met with reporters on Thursday, shrugged off his foot injury, and pronounced that he’s playing in Sunday’s huge game against the New York Giants. And Jackson went on to dismiss criticism over his Nestea plunge celebration against the Cowboys – his quarterback was among the legion of critics – and reported that he is unhappy with his contract situation. Even though he participated in the early individual-drill portion of practice, Jackson was listed as a nonparticipant in Thursday’s session. It was his second straight day without officially practicing. Friday will be a true test, however. Eagles coach Andy Reid is normally reluctant to play one of his players

Eagles’ Jackson again complains about his contract

December 15th, 2010

Two days after DeSean Jackson jaunted for 210 receiving yards and taunted the Cowboys along the way, the wide receiver said the Eagles are “going to have to do something” about a new contract during an appearance on the T.Ocho Show. Jackson spoke with Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco – co-hosts of the Versus show and teammates with the Bengals – during a taped segment via satellite Tuesday afternoon. The episode was aired later that evening, and Jackson spoke about, among other things, his contract situation, which has increasingly become a hot topic. The 24-year-old, who is in the third year of a four-year contract he signed as a rookie, said that the Eagles and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus,

On this night, No. 10 is No. 1

December 13th, 2010

DeSean Jackson stopped, turned, extended his arms, and fell backward into Eagles-Cowboys lore forever. Eleven months later, Jackson finally did “sting” the Cowboys’ backsides. The wiry little wide receiver is a perplexing combination, as infuriating as he is exhilarating. That Twitter boast last year was just one example. If he wore a different uniform, Philadelphia fans would despise his brashness and his petulance. But all is forgiven when No. 10 gathers in a short pass, as he did in the fourth quarter of a tie game Sunday night, and turns the corner. “He’s always doing things like that,” running back LeSean McCoy said. “The kid’s only 165 pounds, but he’s a special talent.” No argument

Jackson finally gets back in action

December 4th, 2010

After returning to form and making some big catches in the 34-24 win over Houston Thursday night, Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson said he’s “very happy” with the Eagles and dismissed a report that said he’s causing distractions at team headquarters in protest of his contract. Jackson, the Pro Bowl wideout, caught three passes for 84 yards against the Texans, including a 33-yard reception deep in Texans territory that set up the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, just four days after being admonished by coach Andy Reid in the locker room following Sunday’s loss to Chicago. After the Texans win, Jackson said he had moved on from the Chicago postgame fireworks and looked forward to
