DeSean Jackson injured his back after he caught a pass from quarterback Kevin Kolb in the afternoon portion of Saturday’s training camp practice. The Eagles gave the injury update after practice, but said Jackson was still being evaluated. About a half hour after the update, the receiver, who hasn’t spoken to reports since he arrived at Lehigh two days ago, walked out of the locker room on his own, got into his car and sped away without comment. Teammates and Eagles sources were saying the injury wasn’t serious. Judging by the way Jackson left the practice facilty, they could be right. Kolb was asked if his heart skipped a beat when he he saw his star wide receiver go down. “Yeah,

DeSean Jackson injures back
Using his index finger, DeSean Jackson drew up a route. The football was his chalkboard and two wiry campers were his pupils. Coach Jackson knew this pump-and-go would get the corner to bite. The quarterback and receiver lined up and connected for a deep, easy-does-it touchdown. “We’re going to be burning DBs all day!” Jackson yelled, arms outstretched in elation, during his weeklong youth football camp that began yesterday at Moorestown Upper Elementary School with about 75 participants. Jackson has been burning plenty of DBs during his first two seasons with the Eagles - something that would suggest he deserves a new contract. “There has been no progress so far,” he said. “I’m looking …

Eagles’ DeSean Jackson has it all, except new contract
DeSean Jackson has told Andy Reid he will report to training camp with the rest of his teammates at Lehigh later this summer. “Yeah, he’ll be here,” Reid said Thursday after the team wrapped up its final voluntary minicamp, a four-day gathering the Pro Bowl receiver skipped. Reid said he spoke to Jackson before the minicamp and the coach cited personal reasons for Jackson’s absence, along with that of Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel. The receiver and cornerback had attended the team’s earlier camps. “If you’re here, you’re going to get better but, again, if you have personal reasons — and it is a voluntary minicamp on top of that — then you have to do what you have to do,” Reid said. …

‘Personal reasons’ keep DeSean Jackson from camp
Wide receiver DeSean Jackson was a no-show at the Eagles’ voluntary practices Monday and is expected to be gone all week, a source close to the situation said. Players seeking new contracts often skip such voluntary sessions to send a message to their team, but several news reports said Jackson’s decision was not related to money. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not return calls seeking comment. Jackson, entering the third season of a four-year, $3.47 million deal, is still under the rookie contract he signed as a second-round draft pick. He has emerged as one of the league’s most dynamic receivers and return men. Earlier this year, he said he was willing to be patient in waiting for a new …

Jackson skips voluntary practice
NOBODY SEEMED real alarmed by DeSean Jackson’s absence from the start of the final week of Eagles OTAs. Wideouts Jason Avant, Hank Baskett and maybe Riley Cooper got more reps with first-string quarterback Kevin Kolb, and Jeremy Maclin might have gotten a little more scrutiny from reporters, as the top target present. A source close to Jackson said the ascending star was in Atlanta yesterday, hanging with Hawks forward Josh Smith, with plans to spend the rest of the week on his home turf of Los Angeles, returning to Philadelphia next week. Of course, the final OTA day is Thursday, then the Eagles won’t be on the field again until Lehigh, so Eagles coaches probably would prefer DeSean had …

DeSean Jackson misses Eagles’ OTA; reason unknown
FINALLY, Sean McDermott had his whole defense together yesterday, the first day of a 2-week, full-squad OTA. The largest Eagles rookie class in more than 20 years was out there in the Nova-Care bubble, 2 weeks of rookie camp under its belt, cutting down a little on the chaos. And all the veterans were in attendance; for the first time in years, no one decided to opt out of an optional activity. So McDermott could relax, take a deep breath, and start fine-tuning the unit he hopes to field when the season opens in a little more than 3 months. He could . . . ahh, wait a minute. Jeremy Maclin just caught a Kevin Kolb pass over the middle, pursued by new starting free safety Marlin Jackson. …

Safety Marlin Jackson goes down with torn Achilles’ tendon
DOWN IN NASHVILLE, Titans running back Chris Johnson has been conspicuous by his absence from the team’s voluntary workouts and offseason training program. Johnson, who rushed for 2,006 yards last season and set an NFL record for yards from scrimmage, wants a contract extension, and wants it now, and he isn’t interested in listening to any excuses why the team can’t give him one. If that means being a Grade-A offseason distraction, so be it. Meanwhile, over at One Nova-Care Way, wide receiver DeSean Jackson is in pretty much the same boat as Johnson. Like Johnson, the 2008 second-round pick clearly has outplayed his 4-year, $3.47 million rookie contract and is looking for an extension. …

Comparing contract dilemmas of DeSean Jackson & Chris Johnson
If you’re wondering where last week’s media-driven back-and-forth with Donovan McNabb left DeSean Jackson, the answer last night was that it left him sitting in front of a rack of polo shirts at the Modell’s in Mount Laurel, N.J., signing autographs for a steady stream of patrons - and acting very skittish about reigniting the controversy. Jackson, the Eagles’ Pro Bowl wideout and punt returner, made it clear he didn’t want to discuss anything relating to McNabb. That point was reiterated by public relations handler Bobby McRae, who took the lone reporter present aside to reinforce that Jackson was available to discuss the Eagles (presumably, at positions other than quarterback) and his …

Eagles wideout Jackson wants to catch passes, not flak
D.J. is not T.O. - at least not yet. Despite playing with a contract that pays less than the going rate for Pro Bowl wide receivers, DeSean Jackson said Monday that he would “patiently wait” for a new deal. “I’m not going to panic,” Jackson said at Franklin Field, where he and teammates Brent Celek and Stewart Bradley were on hand for the unveiling of plans to honor the 50th anniversary of the 1960 championship team. “I’m not going to sit here and be a crybaby about it. I definitely know what I’m worth.” After two seasons in the NFL, Jackson has cemented himself as one of the top playmakers in the game. Last year, he caught 62 passes for 1,156 yards, led the league with an average of 15.2 …

Jackson bides his time, for now
Standing and observing his fellow offensive linemen, Jamaal Jackson looked as healthy as he has been in several minicamps. But when the group of linemen would move and the Eagles center had to walk, the steps were laborious and the limp noticeable. As they are with all injuries, the Eagles have been ambiguous about Jackson’s recovery from the torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered in December. Of course, with knees, there is no exact science. In March, Eagles coach Andy Reid said that Jackson would likely miss training camp and the preseason, and that he expected him back “in the beginning of the season.” On Saturday, Jackson said he wasn’t giving interviews until he had recovered. …

Eagles have some options at center
After playing it straight with the press concerning the past and future of Donovan McNabb, star Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson yesterday dished to the radio station that pays him, 97.5-FM, “The Fanatic.” “It was time for a change,” said Jackson - a shot, clearly, at McNabb. “We’ve got some young players here. I’m just excited about everything.” McNabb’s criticism of the Eagles’ young players in the regular-season loss in Dallas caused Jackson, in his second season, to bristle. Yesterday, as McNabb greeted the sports world as a Redskin, Jackson extracted a measure of revenge.

Eagles wideout DeSean Jackson: ‘It was time for a change’
THESE ARE strange days for the Eagles’ players working out at NovaCare, particularly the offensive guys. DeSean Jackson told a story yesterday of working in the weight room and seeing an image of Donovan McNabb flash on the TV monitor, LeSean McCoy then asking Jackson if McNabb had been traded. “It’s been very interesting,” Jackson said last night, as he made the interview rounds promoting his new foundation and youth football camp, organized to provide money to fight pancreatic cancer, the disease that claimed his father a year ago. (More on that later.) “I’m not really used to anything like it. It’s really past my control; I can’t do anything about it. It’s not like I’m the GM or the …
