Eagles’ Jackson passes exam; playing status uncertain

November 4th, 2010

DeSean Jackson’s recovery from a concussion was apparently so much of an afterthought that Andy Reid initially forgot to mention during his Wednesday news conference that the Eagles wide receiver had passed an independent neurological examination. Jackson participated in his first full practice since he was knocked unconscious over two weeks ago, the Eagles coach said, but he still has hurdles to clear if he’s to play Sunday against the Colts. “We’ll see how he does during practice,” Reid said. “This will be his first full practice . . . and we’ll just see. We’ll take it day by day and see how he does.” Jackson’s concussion against the Atlanta Falcons was the second of his career, the

Eagles’ Jackson after big hit: ‘What happened?’

October 27th, 2010

In his first public comments since he took a vicious hit two weeks ago, DeSean Jackson said that the collision he had with Atlanta cornerback Dunta Robinson felt like he “was in a car accident.” The Eagles wide receiver confirmed that he lost consciousness for what he believed to be “a couple of minutes.” Jackson said it took about an hour before he regained his bearings. “I was like, ‘What happened?’ ” Jackson said Tuesday on Comcast SportsNet’s Daily News Live. “Everybody was like, ‘You got hit hard.’ ” As for whether he anticipates being ready to play in the Eagles’ next game on Nov. 7 against the Colts, Jackson said, “I look forward to be playing.”

Jackson to stay on sidelines

October 23rd, 2010

DeSean Jackson hasn’t made much progress since sustaining a concussion in a violent collision that knocked him out of Sunday’s win over Atlanta. The Pro Bowl wideout won’t play Sunday against the Titans, coach Andy Reid said Friday, and is still sore in his neck and shoulder — the areas of impact from the punishing hit administered by Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson. “Really, it’s more the place where DeSean took the hit that’s more sore than the head,” Reid said. “His mind’s clear — he hasn’t passed the test yet but his mind’s clear. He feels good in that area, but just the area on the right side where (Robinson) hit him there, so it’s a bit sore. “And then kind of up through his back

Reid: Brutal hit will keep Eagles’ Jackson out

October 19th, 2010

If the brutal collision DeSean Jackson endured Sunday was really straight out of a Sylvester Stallone movie, as Eagles coach Andy Reid said Monday it appeared to be, the wide receiver would recover from his concussion in time for the next game, lead his team to a dramatic victory, solve the issue of helmet-to-helmet hits, negotiate the NFL labor dispute, and in the end bring about world peace. But the wince-inducing blow that Atlanta cornerback Dunta Robinson dealt Jackson on the second play of the second quarter did not occur on a Hollywood soundstage. And the fact that both players lay motionless on the Lincoln Financial Field was not an act. “This was like a Rocky movie,” Reid said of

DeSean Jackson has concussion

October 18th, 2010

DeSean Jackson has a concussion, the fifth Eagles player to be diagnosed with a concussion since the regular season began. On a third-and-6 play in the second quarter from the Falcons’ 32. Kevin Kolb, desperate to avoid a sack that would have taken the Birds out of field goal range, flipped a high pass to Jackson across the middle. Jackson got his hands on it, but as he came down, he was separated from the ball, and, apparently, his senses, by a helmet-to-chin hit from Dunta Robinson. Both players went down immediately and did not get up. Crowds gathered around each man as they lay, a few feet from one another, near the Falcons’ sideline. Eventually, both were helped to their feet and

Kolb’s inexperience keeps Jackson from getting ball

October 12th, 2010

Michael Vick must be sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber, living in the whirlpool, pedaling the bike for miles, and praying to the football gods that he has done enough to ease the pain in his chest. The Atlanta Falcons are up next, and there is no doubt that Vick would love nothing better than to stick it to his former team – again – on Sunday. That said, there is likely one person who wants Vick to return to the Eagles’ lineup even more than Vick does. That person is DeSean Jackson. Jackson would never say it, of course. That would be too scandalous, too controversial, too much a back stab at Kevin Kolb, the man Jackson wanted to be the man, at least until Vick burst back onto the scene.

McGlynn the center of attention

September 16th, 2010

Not even halfway through the season opener, Mike McGlynn heard the words he’d been longing to hear since the offseason. Get in there, Mike. McGlynn replaced Jamaal Jackson at center against Green Bay about six minutes into the second quarter and finished the game when it was determined that Jackson had tore his left triceps muscle. On Wednesday, McGlynn harped on the shame of Jackson’s injury — Jackson had made it back from reconstructive knee surgery in a lightning-quick eight months — but also made it clear that his upcoming first career NFL start Sunday against Detroit is the first step toward becoming the team’s long-term answer at Jackson’s position. “You never want to see a guy go

DeSean Jackson embraces marquee-player status

September 10th, 2010

DeSean Jackson said yesterday he doesn’t spend a lot of time thinking about the fact that he is now the franchise’s marquee player. The 2008 second-round pick has raced against Shaq on reality TV and appears in a national Nike commercial, in which he inquires about the ingestion of hummus. His oversized fabric image has replaced that of Donovan McNabb, draped over a section of Lincoln Financial Field. “It’s cool to accept that role . . . It’s still a huge responsibility for myself to go out there, even on days when I’m not feeling good, or whatever it is, I still have to go out there and put everything aside and say, ‘I can’t worry about personal issues,’ [like, say, the contract revision

Too many questions on O-line

September 1st, 2010

If it was hard for Jamaal Jackson to watch the Dallas Cowboys embarrass the Eagles’ offensive line at the end of last season – and it was – then this is even harder. In those back-to-back losses, the second a playoff game, Jackson was recovering from surgery to repair the knee ligament he tore on Dec. 27. There was nothing he could do but watch in the same horror as thousands of other Eagles fans. But now? Jackson has watched through training camp and the preseason as his mates on the offensive line have worked to develop chemistry in front of new starting quarterback Kevin Kolb. Things have not gone smoothly, leading to a general sense of unease as time runs out to prepare for the

For Eagles’ Jamaal Jackson, it’s all about regaining his form

August 31st, 2010

Andy Reid hardly ever strays from the main practice field at the NovaCare Complex. So when the Eagles’ coach waddled over to an adjoining field Monday to watch one-on-one drills between his offensive and defensive lines, there could be just one reason. Reid wanted to see if Jamaal Jackson, in his first full practice back as the starting center, and his surgically repaired left knee could withstand live hitting from flesh-and-bone defensive tackles. After Jackson took on a few bull-rush moves from Antonio Dixon and Mike Patterson – and survived when a lineman fell onto his braced knee – Reid walked away seemingly pleased. “Today was a huge step for me,” said Jackson, who walked off the
