Eagles’ Maclin goes from holdout to breakout

October 12th, 2009

JEREMY MACLIN’S job is to make liars out of people. It is a task he approaches with seriousness and with sincerity. When he held out this summer in a rookie contract dispute, there was much tut-tutting in the land. (Truth in advertising: I tutted but didn’t tut-tut.) As the missed practices began to mount, from one to five to 10 to 15, the concerns were obvious enough, that he was only a kid, and the transition from a spread offense at Missouri to a West Coast offense in Philadelphia was going to be hard enough already, and et cetera.Well, what do you think now? Maclin was here for the exhibition games, for the runs of August, and that was plenty. Obviously. When they drafted Maclin in the …

Maclin makes most of opportunity in Eagles’ win

October 12th, 2009

Opportunity knocked twice for Jeremy Maclin, and both times the Eagles wide receiver greeted opportunity with arms stretched wide.Like the many passes thrown in his direction, Maclin did nothis chances.Opportunity No. 1 came when an injured Kevin Curtis was held out for the second straight game and Maclin started. Opportunity No. 2 came because No. 1 receiver DeSean Jackson was double covered for most of yesterday’s game.Maclin did not disappoint, making a team-high six receptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns as the Eagles coasted past the Buccaneers, 33-14, at Lincoln Financial Field. Maclin and quarterback Donovan McNabb hooked up for two long scores: a 51-yard strike – Maclin’s …

Maclin to start if Curtis ailing

September 26th, 2009

Jeremy Maclin played his first NFL game in the season opener and caught his first NFL pass last week against New Orleans. Now it looks like the Eagles’ first-round pick could be making his first NFL start Sunday against Kansas City. Head coach Andy Reid said Maclin would get the start against the Chiefs if wide receiver Kevin Curtis can’t play. Reid also said former starter Reggie Brown would be active for the first time this season if Curtis is sidelined, but would serve as a backup. Curtis has been nursing a sore knee since training camp and played through sporadic pain but was withheld from practice Friday. Curtis is listed as doubtful, but Maclin didn’t sound overly enthused about the …

Maclin gets a chance

September 25th, 2009

Eagles receiver Kevin Curtis continues to slowly try to work his way back from a couple of groin surgeries and a recent knee injury. Meanwhile, No. 1 draft pick Jeremy Maclin is eagerly awaiting his opportunity to show what he can do. “That’s pretty much how it goes,” Maclin said. “If one guy can’t go, the next guy has to step up and try and take advantage.” In reality, neither Maclin nor Curtis has been able to contribute much. After playing only a few plays in his NFL debut vs. Carolina, Maclin caught two passes last week against New Orleans for 12 yards. Curtis has caught five passes for 70 yards, but he admits he hasn’t been himself since he sustained a sports hernia and needed two …

Eagles’ Maclin glad that Vick is getting back on the field

September 24th, 2009

Jeremy Maclin can still see the play in his mind. The speed, the grace, the dominance. It was a classic NFL moment, the time the quarterback outran a team’s entire defense. “Informants have come forward saying they can link Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick to dog fighting.” – The Associated Press, May 31, 2007 The Philadelphia Eagles’ rookie remembers it so vividly. It was 2002. Maclin was 14 years old then, a young football player whose skills would fit into the NFL’s future. The man on the television helped make it that way. A league once ruled by size and power was being redefined by unpredictable speed. “In pleading guilty, one of the most exciting and polarizing figures in …

Maclin’s goal with Eagles: More field trips

September 23rd, 2009

ANDY REID SCRIPTS the first 15 plays of each game. So it was no accident that Jeremy Maclin, who got on the field for only a handful of snaps and didn’t have a reception in the Eagles’ Week 1 win over Carolina, was part of the three-wide-receiver grouping Reid sent out for the first offensive play Sunday against the Saints. And it also was no accident that the first play was a quick pass to the rookie first-round pick, who gained 6 yards on his first NFL catch. The fact that Mac-lin’s mother flew in from Missouri to watch her son play probably had a little bit to do with Reid dialing up his number right out of the chute. But mainly, the Eagles’ head coach just wanted to let the kid know that …

Rookie needs to get a grip

August 24th, 2009

The two fumbled punts were concern enough for Eagles special-teams coordinator Ted Daisher to pull his rookie returner, Jeremy Maclin, aside for a meeting Saturday.Daisher has seen young, electric returners struggle initially but prosper later, like Cleveland’s Josh Cribbs. Yes, there is a learning process. But Daisher needed to set the record straight with Maclin right away.”You can’t make a big play every time you touch the ball,” Maclin recalled Daisher saying. “Sometimes you have to do the right thing.”The right thing would involve hanging on to the football, a task that has eluded the Eagles’ top draft pick in the first two preseason games. Against New England, Maclin muffed a punt. …

Eagles, Maclin hope wideout is quick study after finally signing

August 5th, 2009

Jeremy Maclin has confidence. The coming days and weeks will show how much of that confidence is based on ability, and how much is just a 21-year-old guy not knowing any better. When Maclin spoke to reporters after finally signing a contract yesterday, he was asked how much he thought he had missed, in the 8 days from when rookies were supposed to arrive at Lehigh until team management and agent Jim Steiner agreed on a 5-year deal with $9.5 million in guarantees, that could earn Maclin as much as $15.5 million if he reaches all the incentives. “I have no idea. I guess I’ll find out tomorrow morning,” said Maclin, who was in St. Louis when the agreement was reached Monday night and did not …

Maclin’s absence has Reid concerned

July 31st, 2009

Andy Reid appeared more concerned yesterday afternoon about the continued absence of first-round pick Jeremy Maclin. The contract negotiations for the rookie wide receiver were not done, which wiped out the first several days of practice for Maclin.”You can’t buy back that time,” Reid said yesterday at Lehigh University after the Eagles’ first full-squad practice. “He’s going to have to be playing a catch-up game. It’s important that he’s here; that’s the bottom line.”Maclin has missed four days of practice. The team begins full-contact drills this morning at 8:15 a.m. Reid said that both sides were “not as close as we need to be.”Andrew Brandt, who is handling negotiations for the Eagles, …

A good sign: Gap between Eagles, Maclin appears to be closing

July 31st, 2009

Well, the first-round picks are starting to sign, across the NFL.And the Eagles hold their first full-squad, contact practice this morning. So, whither Jeremy Maclin? There were indications last night that a deal might be near between the Birds and their first-round wideout, who has missed six workouts in shorts, five of them held among rookies and a handful of veterans recovering from injuries. Team sources seemed to think the gap was narrowing, and that the rising number of slots being filled in above and below Maclin should speed the process. Certainly, if the impasse drifts on through the weekend, there’s a real problem, more substantial than we’ve been led to believe up to now. That …

Eagles first-round pick Maclin unlikely to make up for lost time

July 31st, 2009

Andy Reid wasn’t making a threat. He wasn’t even trying to send a warning to holdout rookie wide receiver Jeremy Maclin. In the Eagles head coach’s perspective, he was just stating a fact.Maclin has missed the first 5 days of training camp and, as a result, has missed valuable learning time that has set him behind.”That’s the fact of it,” Reid said yesterday as the Eagles had their first full-squad workout with the exception of Maclin, the first-round pick who hasn’t been in camp because a contract agreement hasn’t been reached. “How ever it’s said or worked out, it comes down to playing the game. It’s that simple. Any reps you take away from yourself, I think it hurts you as a player.”Reid …

Jackson in, Maclin out

July 30th, 2009

Upon his check-in, receiver DeSean Jackson told reporters he planned to “start off on the same track” as last year and have an even better sophomore campaign. Jackson admitted that being in Lehigh for all of last year’s training camp paved the way for his rookie success. But he didn’t fault fellow receiver Jeremy Maclin, this year’s first-round pick who hasn’t signed his contract yet, for not being here. Maclin missed the entire rookie/selected veterans camp, which accounted for five practices. The two receivers practiced together at Donovan McNabb’s camp in Arizona earlier this month but Jackson said they “never got into talks” about Maclin’s contract. Jackson’s contract negotiations last …
