Aside from Marlin Jackson, some ‘tweaks’ to Eagles players

June 4th, 2010

By last evening, left guard Todd Herremans was back from his visit with Charlotte, N.C., foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, proclaiming via Twitter that “all is well” except for the plane’s foul stench. Eagles coach Andy Reid said Anderson “thinks it’s going to be all right.” Reid said Herremans visited with Anderson last year, before his August stress-fracture repair, performed by Dr. Steven Raikin, of the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Middle linebacker Stewart Bradley brandished a paintbrush during the Eagles Youth Partnership’s annual Playground Build, at Wister Elementary in Germantown, and Bradley said he wasn’t concerned about his “tweaked” left calf, …

Marlin Jackson one of first season-ending injured players

June 4th, 2010

Poor Marlin Jackson. Well, not exactly poor Marlin Jackson. He was a first-round draft pick of the Colts and paid accordingly, with $4.35 million guaranteed in a rookie contract worth $7 million. Over the last three years, however, injuries have sealed the fate of Jackson, with Tuesday’s ruptured Achilles inside the Eagles’ indoor practice facility being the third major injury in three years, following ACL tears in both 2008 and 2009. The Eagles knew the injury risk coming in and protected themselves contractually; it usually is no coincidence that players with recent history of injuries get injured again, usually at different body parts overcompensating for the previous injury.

Allen dives in at free safety for Eagles

June 3rd, 2010

When a loud voice summoned “Number ones!” to line up for a full offense-versus-defense session Wednesday, the Eagles’ No. 2 draft pick took the spot at free safety. South Florida product Nate Allen would have preferred his promotion came by another means than Marlin Jackson’s left Achilles’ tendon injury on Tuesday. It could cost Jackson, who has already missed two seasons with injuries to each knee, another season after upcoming surgery. But under a broiling sun on the Eagles’ outdoor field at the NovaCare Center, Allen went about the business of trying to learn quickly and adapt to the pro game wisely, because the Eagles may just be depending on him come September. “It felt good to get …

Eagles rookie gets first chance to impress

June 3rd, 2010

When a loud voice summoned “Number ones!” to line up for a full offense vs. defense session Wednesday, the Eagles’ No. 2 draft pick took the spot at free safety. South Florida product Nate Allen would have preferred his promotion come by other means than Marlin Jackson’s left Achilles’ tendon injury the day before. But what will likely be a season-ending event for the hard-luck Jackson is an opportunity for one of the newest Eagles. Under a broiling sun on the team’s outdoor field at the NovaCare Complex, Allen went about the business of trying to learn quickly and adapt to the pro game, because the Eagles may just be depending on him in September. “It felt good to get in there with the …

Rookie safety Allen runs with Eagles’ first team

June 3rd, 2010

When the Eagles used the 37th pick in April’s draft to grab South Florida safety Nate Allen, it was clear they thought highly of his future in the NFL. They probably didn’t expect it to arrive so fast. Allen, a 22-year-old from South Florida, was running with the Eagles’ first team defense Wednesday, a day after veteran Marlin Jackson was lost likely for the season because of injury. Allen’s fellow defenders praised his physical skills but stressed the importance of honing his mental game - learning the defense, handling pressure, and being prepared to cope with the ups and downs of a long season. “Obviously in this defense he’s got his work cut out for him,” strong safety Quintin Mikell …

Eagles’ linebacker Bradley tweaks calf

June 3rd, 2010

The Eagles’ defensive plans for 2010 looked a little wobbly when middle linebacker Stewart Bradley limped off yesterday favoring his left leg, the day after Marlin Jackson’s injury. Let’s see - middle linebacker and free safety. Wasn’t there some sort of trouble there last season? Bradley left the field and went inside midway through yesterday’s workout. The Eagles later said he had tweaked a calf, an injury that shouldn’t be a big deal, unless Bradley aggravates it or something. Through a team spokesman, he declined to speak with reporters, but he later tweeted “all is well.” “Stew looks good,” tight end Brent Celek offered. “Looks like his old self to me. I was telling him the other day, …

Shanahan: Skins have made offer to Brian Westbrook

June 2nd, 2010

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan made his most emphatic public overtures to free agent running back Brian Westbrook Wednesday, saying Washington has made Westbrook an official offer to join a full stable of running backs that already includes veterans Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson and Willie Parker. Asked after Wednesday’s offseason workout session if he had heard from Westbrook or his agent, Shanahan told the assembled media, “No, but if you guys hear anything, just tell him that we’re ready. “We want him to sign with us,” Shanahan said. “Like I said, it could be some great competition. I really like Brian, what he’s done and how he’s handled himself. I’m sure he’s weighing some options. It’s …

Marlin Jackson injured in practice

June 1st, 2010

New Eagles defensive back Marlin Jackson went down during today’s OTAs at the NovaCare Complex with a right ankle injury. Jackson fell on a deep pass over the middle from Kevin Kolb to Jeremy Maclin and limped off the field, assisted by head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder. Jackson, coming off back-to-back ACL surgeries, is visibly upset and is leaving the practice bubble in a cart and with his head in his hands. The Eagles knew there was a risk involved and so did Jackson. His contract is heavily structured with incentives.

Ex-Colt Jackson signs with Eagles

March 11th, 2010

Marlin Jackson’s comeback from a second season-ending knee injury will continue in Philadelphia. The Indianapolis Colts’ 2005 first-round draft pick, who missed 21 regular-season games the past two years with knee injuries, signed a two-year contract with the Eagles on Wednesday reportedly worth $6 million. Jackson, 26, became a free agent last week when the Colts did not issue the restricted free agent a one-year tender. He is excited about his new team. “The most appealing thing about the deal was that it’s a winning franchise,” Jackson told Philadelphia media. “Winning is the most important thing for me and I came from a winning franchise and that was a key thing.” Also appealing was …

Eagles sign defensive back Marlin Jackson to 2-year deal

March 11th, 2010

NORMALLY, TRACY Leinen arranges travel for the Eagles. Yesterday, she was trying to prevent it. Leinen, the Birds’ director of travel operations, was dispatched to chase down Marlin Jackson as the free-agent defensive back was walking out the NovaCare front door yesterday afternoon, headed for a planned visit with the Jets. Leinen told Jackson to come back - his representatives had reached agreement with the Birds on a 2-year deal that makes Jackson your starting free safety, heading into the spring. “They held the limo up and we hammered it out, got it done,” said agent Doug Hendrickson, who felt it was more a matter of hashing out details than of resolving huge differences, at the end of …

Former Colts safety Marlin Jackson visits Eagles

March 10th, 2010

Finally, a free-agent visit. The Eagles apparently see Marlin Jackson as a free safety, and there seems to be a pretty good chance that Jackson will be signed by the time he is scheduled to meet with reporters today at 11 a.m. at NovaCare. (Though at least one report indicates a pending visit with the Jets.) Yes, he’s the Colts cornerback with the anterior cruciate ligament injuries each of the past two seasons, the left in 2009 and the right in 2008. He is the guy who intercepted Tom Brady to seal the Colts’ trip to the Super Bowl following the 2006 season. No, he isn’t Michael Jackson’s brother. That’s Marlon. What else do we know? Well, Jackson was a Jason Avant teammate at Michigan, …
