Eagles sign 3 players to fill practice squad

September 7th, 2010

The Eagles signed tight end Garrett Mills, safety Chip Vaughn, and wide receiver Jeremy Williams on Monday, giving them the maximum of eight players on their practice squad. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Mills was fourth-round pick by New England in 2006. He spent the last three seasons in Minnesota. He had seven catches for 91 yards in nine career games and spent a season on the practice squad. The addition of Mills means the Eagles probably have closed the book on Cornelius Ingram. The second-year tight end was trying to come back from back-to-back ligament tears in his left knee. Ingram, a fifth-round draft pick in 2009, struggled during the preseason.

Eagles boast a deep and dangerous receiving corps

September 7th, 2010

On the first play of his first drive as the Eagles starter, Kevin Kolb hit DeSean Jackson in stride for 21 yards. On his second throw in that preseason game, he found Jeremy Maclin for 29. Welcome to the Eagles air attack, 2010 edition. Two plays after hitting Maclin, Kolb targeted Jason Avant and then Brent Celek. Both passes were incomplete, but the point remains. When Kolb drops back to throw, he’ll be surveying an all-you-can-eat buffet of receiving talent and variety, from the speedy Jackson and Maclin to the sure-handed Avant to the big, reliable Celek. And his platter that night didn’t even include rookie Riley Cooper, a big wideout who impressed in training camp. On his first play

Eagles’ Kolb had to show patience sitting behind McNabb

September 7th, 2010

It was an awkward moment. The rookie quarterback was to meet the franchise quarterback for the first time. A few weeks earlier, the Eagles had used their top draft pick to take the rookie, a move that “shocked” the starter. But here they were: Kevin Kolb, understandably nervous, and Donovan McNabb, introducing himself with his trademark sarcasm. “The very first time I met him he called me ‘The Future,’ like right off the bat,” Kolb said. “So I was like, ‘Aw, man,’ because I didn’t know anything about Donovan. I just heard from [reporters]. But after that first initial handshake . . . ” Kolb paused, grimaced and raised his hands as if to say, “Everything was A-OK.” There were certainly

For Eagles, a weekend to remember, or forget

September 7th, 2010

OK, there hasn’t been a Daily News since Saturday, and a whole buncha stuff has happened with the Eagles since then. Since there is this “Internet” thing, as well as something called “television,” those of you who aren’t incarcerated probably have a pretty good idea of how most of those developments went down. But here is a handy roundup, for posterity: 1. Max Jean-Gilles got a tattoo: While Max was watching the progress of his ornately-lettered initials being carved into the inside of his left forearm, as part of a design that also involved a crown and burning money, his cell phone rang. It was agent Drew Rosenhaus, who needed to tell Max about something the team had just done. “I was

Theismann says McNabb wasn’t appreciated in Philly

September 7th, 2010

Get Joe Theismann talking about Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb, and he doesn’t hold back. Theismann said McNabb, traded to the Redskins in April after playing 11 seasons with the Eagles, was never appreciated in Philly. “From the day Donovan McNabb was drafted by the Eagles, he’s been booed,” said Theismann, who will work NFL Network games this season with Bob Papa and Matt Millen. “No one liked that pick in the beginning . . . It seems to me that everything Donovan did just wasn’t good enough for people to appreciate the football player he was. Everybody agrees of what type a man he was - and is - but from a football standpoint everybody always expected just a little bit more.” Theismann

Packers quarterback Rodgers can relate to what Eagles’ Kolb is facing

September 7th, 2010

Nobody knows better than Aaron Rodgers what Kevin Kolb is feeling right now. The Packers’ starting quarterback played the same, often-frustrating, 3-year waiting game that Kolb did. He dealt with the same replacing-a-legend pressure that Kolb is feeling right now. (OK, so maybe Donovan McNabb isn’t a legend, but he is a six-time Pro Bowler with 216 career touchdown passes.) And he faced the same doubts from critics who felt he’d never measure up to his predecessor that Kolb is facing. So it should come as no surprise that Kolb has reached out to the Packers’ quarterback for advice. And it should come as no surprise to anyone who knows him that Rodgers, whose Packers will face Kolb’s Eagles

Wells meets his new team

September 6th, 2010

Reggie Wells admits it’s a bit of shock to find himself in Philadelphia. “For being somewhere as long as I was, it’s different,” Wells said after Sunday’s Eagles practice, “but I’m excited about the move.” The Eagles picked up Wells on Friday from the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a 2011 draft pick. The offensive lineman was a starter there since 2006, drafted in the sixth round in 2003. Wells won’t begin his Eagles career as a starter, waiting behind starting guards Nick Cole and Todd Herremans and center Jamaal Jackson. Eagles coach Andy Reid expects Wells to contribute. “Reggie has started a tremendous amount of games at, really, both guard positions,” Reid said. “He’s somebody that

Few answers yet on Eagles offensive line

September 6th, 2010

If you enter the words “Eagles,” “offensive line” and “question” a Google search turns up roughly 226,000 hits. That’s been the label stuck to the offensive line from the start of minicamp through now, the eve of the regular season. The unit as a whole, and the individuals who make it up, enter 2010 amid an air of uncertainty. Even that description seemed generous after its preseason performance, when free blitzers made the line seem less like a question and more like a sure liability. But Eagles coaches have deflected criticism, saying mistakes elsewhere have made the line appear worse than it is. Tangible help may also be on the way with the returns of Todd Herremans, Nick Cole, and,

Nick Cole to start at right guard for Eagles

September 6th, 2010

The way Andy Reid portrayed it, Nick Cole was returning to his rightful place when the Eagles’ coach named him the starting right guard after trading away Stacy Andrews on Saturday. Cole spent most of last season at right guard until center Jamaal Jackson suffered a knee injury. Cole moved over to center for the final two games of the season, and as Jackson rehabbed through the off-season and training camp, Cole stayed at center. Andrews, meanwhile, was penciled in as starting right guard, the position the Eagles felt he would secure for several years when they signed him to a six-year, $38.9 million deal in February 2008. He was the starter from minicamp up until he was dealt Saturday to

One coach a constant in Kevin Kolb’s football development

September 6th, 2010

If he could have, Kevin Kolb would have followed Art Briles to this south Texas town, home of Baylor University. Twice before in the life and football times of Kolb, he trailed after this Svengali-type coach - first to Stephenville High School and then to the University of Houston. On both occasions, Kolb had to make gut-wrenching decisions. But the road shared by these two Texas slingers, separated only by time and now thousands of miles, had to eventually hit a fork. Kolb was slated for the NFL - and eventually the Eagles - while Briles was to continue his climb up the coaching ladder to where he resides now at Baylor. But the bond remains. Both were decorated Texas high school

Ravens deal Barnes to Eagles

September 5th, 2010

On a day when many moves are expected, the Ravens dealt outside linebacker Antwan Barnes to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick in 2011. Barnes, a fourth-round pick in 2007, posted a career-high three sacks in 11 regular-season games last year and was expected to back up starter Terrell Suggs. Barnes finished this preseason with 10 tackles and a half sack. Barnes did not return a request for comment, but via his Twitter account (vikes42), he wrote, “Woooooooo……..I had a good run in Baltimore……thank everyone for your support……its a new beginning and I’m ready to be a eagle…”

Eagles trade Andrews, sneak under roster limit

September 5th, 2010

The Eagles had to work overtime to get down to the NFL-mandated 53-man roster limit, and it cost them an extra offensive lineman. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said the paperwork when they traded offensive lineman Stacy Andrews to Seattle for a late 2011 draft pick went through three minutes after the 6 p.m. deadline. So the Eagles had to cut offensive lineman Max Jean-Gilles while the Andrews trade was being finalized. Roseman said the Eagles hope to re-sign Jean-Gilles, who became a free agent, as soon as today. For now, the Eagles’ roster is at 52 after a hectic cutdown day for the Eagles, which was highlighted by the trade of Andrews. That ended his disappointing stay with the
