Could 4-3 defense be keeping Eagles out of the Super Bowl?

February 4th, 2011

Dom Capers thinks the Eagles could successfully transition into a 3-4 defense. OK, the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator – one of the brightest minds behind the 3-4 – wasn’t speaking specifically about the Eagles. Capers actually addressed a general question a day before the Eagles named Juan Castillo their defensive coordinator and reaffirmed their commitment to the 4-3. But the premise is one that deserves serious consideration, as a pair of 3-4 defenses from the Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers prepare to play Super Bowl XLV. Pittsburgh has long employed the odd-even seven-man front, but Green Bay switched only last season. So the Packers’ successful changeover invites the

At Super Bowl media day, some lobbying for Eagles job

February 2nd, 2011

Media day at the Super Bowl – with its stages, signposts, and swarm of reporters – has the feel of a political convention. So in some ways, it was appropriate that several assistant coaches from the Packers and Steelers were openly campaigning for the Eagles’ defensive-coordinator vacancy on Tuesday. With the biggest game of their coaching lives looming, it might not have been the most appropriate time to look ahead to career opportunities. But this week and, more important, Sunday’s game will be the last chance for some of the candidates to impress the Eagles and two other NFL teams still in search of defensive coordinators. And assistants like the Packers’ Winston Moss know that

Reid should have punted instead of piling on Akers

February 1st, 2011

Andy Reid is almost never candid. Now we know why. Unjamming a foot that big from a mouth that large must be a daunting task. For more than a decade, Reid has refused to speak his mind, choosing instead to repeat the same mind-numbing talking points. Why stand beside the truth when it’s so much easier to lean on comfortable crutches? His news conferences have more often than not doubled as forced public lobotomies. He coughs. He grumbles. Before you know it, your brain has switched off and little puddles of drool have formed at your feet. It is the way things have always worked with Reid, much to our frustration. That briefly changed after the Packers playoff game when he was asked about

Super Bowl XLVI for the Birds?

January 24th, 2011

PITTSBURGH STEELERS, Green Bay Packers, Super Bowl XLV. The Steelers have won six Super Bowls, the Packers have won three and that’s just the way it is. The rich get richer and the Eagles search for a defensive coordinator. For whatever it’s worth, the right two teams got through yesterday – Packers over Bears, Steelers over Jets. Also, for whatever it’s worth, the Eagles aren’t a million miles away from playing in this game again. They need a better defense – nobody has ever won a Super Bowl allowing 377 points, which is what the Eagles allowed in 2010 – but they do not necessarily need a great defense. These thing run in cycles. This year, the top two teams in scoring defense made it to

Packers’ unpredictable defense confuses Vick

January 10th, 2011

It was a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse. The Green Bay Packers’ defense blitzed and then backed off into Cover 2. It played coverage for several plays and then ramped up the aggression, bringing pressure from different positions and angles. The whole idea was to confuse and contain Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick in an NFC wild-card game at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday. The Packers accepted the fact that Vick was going to break containment from time to time. He was going to scramble. He was going to escape the pocket and complete passes downfield. They just wanted to minimize the damage by Vick, whose ability to ad-lib into explosive plays is unparalleled in the NFL.

Now it’s decision time for Eagles, Kolb

January 10th, 2011

Not many Lincoln Financial Field fans were in the mood to really savor the irony, when Kevin Kolb started warming up on the sideline after Michael Vick twisted an ankle on a second shot at a two-point conversion attempt, with 4 minutes and 2 seconds remaining in yesterday’s 21-16 Eagles’ wild-card playoff round loss to the visiting Green Bay Packers. The whole Vick season of redemption began at the Linc against the Packers in the season opener, 4 months earlier, when Kolb was driven from the game with a concussion. Now Kolb might have been called upon to save the season, against the Packers, in the playoffs. But Kolb knew pretty quickly that wasn’t happening. He went over to Vick, as he

Justice’s mistakes costly for Eagles

January 10th, 2011

It started off OK. Right tackle Winston Justice handled the trickery and blitzes and generally kept the blind side of Michael Vick clean. Usually, Justice faced former USC teammate Clay Matthews. Usually, Justice did his job. Then, the madness. With 2 minutes, 52 seconds to play in the third quarter, on the first play of an Eagles’ drive that began at their 46, Justice false-started. On the next play, he lined up in the backfield, a penalty, and threw Matthews to the ground, an egregious holding penalty. “I got two penalties in one play. That’s hard to do. I did it,” Justice said. “You can’t make mistakes like that. I made a big one.” He cost his team 15 yards before they’d gained 1. The

Eagles’ season ends with Packers’ pick in end zone

January 10th, 2011

THE SEASON DIED, just like that, so suddenly that fans who rose from their seats to cheer for a possible game-winning touchdown were able to quickly pivot and head for the parking lots when Green Bay cornerback Tramon Williams outfought Eagles rookie receiver Riley Cooper at the goal line for a jump ball. The pass flew, rashly, unnecessarily, from Michael Vick’s hand, on first down from the Packers’ 27, with 33 seconds remaining, plenty of time to regroup and try again to win a game the Eagles had spent the entire late afternoon and evening losing, on merit. Plenty of time, if Williams hadn’t expertly handchecked Cooper, then gone up and gathered in the ball, while Cooper watched,

Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jamar Chaney ready for his biggest test

January 9th, 2011

There were 21 linebackers chosen in the NFL draft ahead of Jamar Chaney. But not many of them will be in such a critical position today as the Philadelphia Eagles’ seventh-round choice from Mississippi State, the 220th overall choice. Barring a miraculous recovery from veteran Stewart Bradley — who is listed as “questionable” with head coach Andy Reid saying it would be “a stretch” for him to play — Chaney will start at middle linebacker when the Eagles meet the Green Bay Packers in today’s NFC wild-card playoff game at Lincoln Financial Field. “I know a lot of linebackers were chosen before me,” Chaney said. “I want to prove to the people that didn’t draft me that they were wrong.”

Eagles know they need to put pressure on Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers

January 8th, 2011

Trent Cole knows what Job No. 1 will be Sunday for the Philadelphia Eagles defense. “A big key to this game is getting pressure on the quarterback. The only way we’re going to get pressure is everybody’s got to be executing on their plays,” the veteran defensive end said Friday. That quarterback would be Aaron Rodgers, who will lead the Green Bay Packers into Lincoln Financial Field for an NFC wild-card playoff game. There’s more to the Packers’ offense than the six-year veteran from California, but pretty much everybody agrees that if the Eagles can’t get a strong pass rush on Rodgers, not a whole lot else will matter. Rodgers brings a Michael Vick-esque feel to his game. He trails

McCoy says Eagles may rely more on ground game against Packers

January 7th, 2011

LeSean McCoy made thousands – millions? – of Eagles fans ecstatic when he said Thursday that the Eagles plan to run the ball more against the Green Bay Packers. It remains to be seen what coach Andy Reid thinks of his running back’s divulgence. Of course, McCoy’s candidness could just be part of the cat-and-mouse games opposing teams play against each other before a big showdown. “I think so,” McCoy said when asked if the pass-oriented Eagles intended to rush the ball more. “Going into this game plan, I’m running the ball a little bit more. With [the Packers'] type of defense – a 3-4 – they kind of invite you to run the ball.” There are a host of reasons why running the ball a touch more
