The New Orleans Saints gave running back Reggie Bush permission in February to talk to other teams and gauge his value as the franchise and Bush tried to work out a restructured contract, according to three NFL sources. Bush and agent Joel Segal were told that a number of teams would be interested in paying him handsomely, or at least more than the Saints have apparently been willing to offer at this point. That is one of the reasons that Bush has made contradictory statements about his future in New Orleans and didn’t participate in offseason workouts with Saints players. The expectation from Bush, according to the sources, is that he will be playing for another team next season. The

Sources: Saints allowed Bush to gauge interest: Dolphins, Steelers, Seahawks, Giants are candidates; Eagles have strong interest
The Eagles could have competition for their preferred candidates for defensive coordinator. Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said he wants to interview assistant coaches on both Super Bowl teams before he makes a hire, according to the Arizona Republic. “I interviewed a couple of guys at the Senior Bowl and felt good about that,” Whisenhunt said. “But there are guys on both teams I’m interested in talking to after the Super Bowl.” Whisenhunt is a former Steelers assistant and is close to linebackers coach Keith Butler, who was a candidate for the Cardinals’ defensive coordinator opening 2 years ago. Bill Davis, another former Steelers assistant, was named coordinator and was fired several

Eagles, Cardinals may be competing for same coordinator candidates
WE’VE ALL had our fun with the Eagles’ achingly slow search for a new defensive coordinator, particularly since it included the man who is doing the searching flying off to Antigua with the missus for a week right after firing the old defensive coordinator. It’s made for a lot of great Twitter jokes, and God knows I love a good Twitter joke. But it’s time to get serious here and try to figure out whom exactly the Eagles are waiting on. Because they most certainly are waiting on somebody. As much as some talk-show hosts would like you to believe the Eagles are the NFL’s version of the Keystone Kops, they aren’t. You don’t get to the playoffs nine times in 11 years by being totally clueless.

Agent Frank Murtha confirmed that April, who met with Steelers coach Mike Tomlin on Sunday and also interviewed with San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary, accepted a similar position with Philadelphia.

Center A.Q. Shipley, a Coraopolis native who hoped to follow in Mike Webster’s footsteps with the Steelers, signed with the Philadelphia Eagles today. Shipley, who started 39 games at Penn State and made several All-American teams, was drafted in the seventh round by the Steelers last year. However, he did not make the team and spent the season on their practice squad.

Brian Westbrook will spend today at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center visiting concussion specialists. After suffering his second concussion in 20 days in the third quarter of the Eagles’ loss at San Diego on Sunday, the team said yesterday that Westbrook would consult with neuropsychologist Mark R. Lovell and neurosurgeon Joseph Maroon. Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder said Lovell had been communicating with the team’s medical staff on the running back’s condition since he suffered the first concussion in an Oct. 26 game at Washington. Westbrook was knocked unconscious after taking a knee to the helmet from middle linebacker London Fletcher in that game and sat out the Eagles’ …

Westbrook at center of concussion controversy
Right until the end, to the minute that Michael Vick signed with the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday night, there was widespread national media speculation that he could be headed to the Steelers. How does this happen? Do that many people not do their homework? There’s a very good reason that the Post-Gazette’s Ed Bouchette — who wasn’t fooled for one second by the absurdity of Vick potentially signing here — wrote on these pages Aug. 2 when first addressing the topic: “Dan Rooney may reside in Ireland, but he has not lost his mind.” There was no way the Steelers were going to touch Vick. Not one person in the organization — from Rooney, the chairman emeritus, on down — thought he was …
